Being in college keeps one’s mind on numerous things, such as class, classwork, jobs, internships, club activities, sports, and plans after graduation. If I were to ask you the last time that you decided to set everything aside for one day at the most, what would your answer be? Most don’t even recall the last time they decided to put themselves first in a variety of situations, as they are often too caught up with things that they need to accomplish. Everyone needs a break, mainly for themselves, especially to de-stress. Here is some advice from yours truly about putting yourself first:
Spend a day alone. Do yoga. Watch your favorite movie. Buy or make your favorite meal. Just take time to relax. You can cleanse your mind of any stress or problems that might be occurring by just taking some time off from everything that you’re currently focusing on. Taking a breather and the time off from your busy schedule to spend time by yourself and for yourself should always be important.
Let go of negative people in your life that are holding you back or making you feel uncomfortable. We have all had our fair share of negative friends that have come into our lives and have tried to control us and tell us what we can and can’t be. If it continues and you know that they are not helping you or supporting you in your endeavors or just generally being negative toward you for no reason, it’s time to tell them goodbye.
Learn how to say “no” more. This is a problem for me because I want to help everyone and be involved in everything that I can be, even if I don’t have the time. Know your limits and what tasks you have to focus on first before you take on anything extra that you might not have extra time for.
Write. Yes, of course, I’m going to be partial to the idea of writing because it’s something I like to do. I find it very relaxing. Just set aside some time a few days a week to jot down your thoughts, feelings, goals, accomplishments, or anything that you feel should be on paper for you to look back at later. I try to write as much as possible and even the smallest word or sentence has the ability to amount to everything. Trust me.
Exfoliate and drink plenty of water. Recently, I have been drinking more water and washing my face with some sort of wash twice a day and my skin has cleared up. Doing both regularly will clean your pores and make you face smoother. Your skin will thank you later.
Keep in mind how important it is to take care of yourself because you deserve it. When you put yourself first, you’ll feel better about how you handle certain situations and you will be more confident in yourself. I’m slowly learning how to put myself first and I am still having difficulties with it. At the end of the day, I just know that it’s not for nothing because it’ll eventually be everything.
