Let me start off by saying that my family has a few Thanksgiving food traditions that might be different from other families. My great-grandmother made pearl onions (little while onions that are adorable, though I don’t like them much), and mashed turnips (which I always confuse with mashed potatoes, but eat a spoonful, anyway).
I left the Grandma Bunny traditions out of my list, but other than that, I’m getting serious about which foods outrank the others.
Here goes!
1. Stuffing
Stuffing is a beautiful food. It is bread. It is carbs. It it herbs. If it has celery in it, it is part vegetable. Not to mention that I hardly ever get to eat stuffing unless it is Thanksgiving.
2. Mashed Potatoes/Sweet potatoes
Anyone I know deeply knows I have a food romance with mashed potatoes. The only reason these creamy, fluffy, delicious morsels are not in the top place is because I eat them all the time. Side note: If there are pieces of skin, I’m even more interested.
3. Pie
I could eat an entire meal made up of pie and be happy. And with all the various flavors that are brought to my family Thanksgiving, pie is substantial and deeply missed if there is a shortage.
4. Rolls/Corn Bread
Rolls are a staple of Thanksgiving dinner. Personally, I find myself sopping up stray gravy and food more than just eating them, but you know, to each their own. Corn bread is delicious as well, and I eat it less than normal rolls, so I’ll keep it on the same level.
5. Gravy
Ah, gravy. What a versatile sauce. Personally, gravy will get put on my mashed potatoes and stuffing, but not turkey (I’ll get to that in a moment), and it tastes hearty and salty and runs down off of the food so beautifully. YUM!
6. Green Bean Casserole
I am guilty of getting some green beans with creaminess with extra french-fried onions, and thought I’m not the hugest fan of green beans, I can tolerate two servings of this before I’m done.
7. Turkey
Turkey may be the main dish, but it is overshadowed by the side dishes that accompany the meal. I love some light meat (or dark. Really whatever someone puts on my plate), but I know I’ll save much more room for the foods higher up on the list.
8. Cranberry
Cranberry sauce is delish, but since I only put it on my turkey, I have to limit it to the bottom of the list.
9. All the various vegetables
I do not enjoy vegetables that much to begin with, so loading up my plate with them at the holidays just doesn’t seem right. I have nothing against those who love vegetables. I am just not one of those people.
That’s all for now! What did you think of my list?
