Why The Gospel Is Not What You Think It Is

As Christians, most of us have heard the Great Commission at least once, if not hundreds of times, but what do we do with that after we hear it? The Great Commission refers to a passage in Matthew 28 that says in verses 19-20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” According to this passage, we as Christians are called to go into all the world to preach the gospel.

This can mean going to Kenya, Cambodia, Chicago or even in your own neighborhood. It's not the where that matters, often times it's the doing that stops us. Sharing the gospel is something that intimidates or scares us and often times causes us not to share it with people. Recently I learned about Creation 2 Christ in preparation for a mission trip I went on. Creation 2 Christ, or C2C, is a great method for sharing the gospel that tells it starting with Creation and going all the way to Christ. I love C2C because it made me realize the gospel really is a conversation.

Even when we learned C2C, it was through hearing others say it. Knowing C2C and having a simple and easy way to share was really helpful when went on our trip. Sharing the gospel does not have to be a big, formal demonstration where you use the perfect language, it is something you share with others honestly. Most of the times I shared the gospel it was just in a simple conversation talking about the differences between our religions.

This was an amazing experience but it also made me realize that we should not just be sharing the gospel when we are on a mission trip. We should be sharing it where ever we are, all the time. Whether that means at school or at work, using every opportunity possible to tell others about God. That does not mean being pushy and constantly preaching at people. Instead it means living our lives as a witness and testimony to what God has done in our lives. It also means not being afraid to ask people what they believe in and talking about your beliefs. When I was getting ready to go on my trip people would ask me if I was scared about going to another country to share the gospel.

I would tell them that I'm scared to tell the gospel here in America because I'm always afraid someone is going to argue with me or get mad at me. This is not a good enough reason to not be sharing the gospel with people and actively living out the great commission wherever I am. Colossians 4:2-6 speaks to this when it says "2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. 3 And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. 4 Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should.5 Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. 6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

God used this mission trip and learning C2C to teach me that the gospel is not only a conversation, but one that I should be sharing all the time with everyone.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
