The First Presidential Debate

Was I watching a presidential debate or an SNL skit?

The First Presidential Debate

I am going to be honest ... this whole election is disgraceful. I am very disappointed that this is, apparently, the best America has to offer. Republican candidate Donald J. Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton debated on the night of Sept. 26, 2016. I want to get the fact clear that I do not support either candidates. I think they would both mess our country up in their own personal way. The 2016 election is Nov. 8th, and I will not be old enough to vote. I am very happy that I will not be old enough to vote. I understand that women had a very tough time getting the right to vote, so I am not the type of person to waist a freedom that my ancestors, and fellow women, worked so hard getting. If I could vote, I think I would vote for Hillary Clinton, considering it is one less vote for Donald Trump. (I really do not like Trump.)

At the beginning of the debate the first question was asked. “Why are you a better choice to create jobs that will put more money in workers pockets?” With this question, Hillary seemed to be avoiding it. I do not think we got a direct answer from her within this whole question. With this question, Trump brings up that he believes China is using us as a piggy bank. Trump says he will lower taxes 35 to 50 percent, and will get new companies to expand and start. Clinton replies to that, by saying he is “trumped up” and will just cause another trickle down effect, which will not work. Through the whole debate the audience truly saw how much Trump hates China. Trump also brings up the fact that America owes $20 trillion. Clinton thought that Trump would just mess up the middle class, and possibly cause another recession. Hillary Clinton claimed that Donald Trump said, “Climate change was a hoax made up by the Chinese.” (Again more with the hate for China.) Trump, interrupting Hillary (like he did most of the debate), said that he never said that. When in reality there is a tweet by Donald J. Trump that reads: “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make US manufacturing non competitive."

The second question was, “How do you defend your position on tax cuts for the wealthy?” There really is not too much to say about this topic. It somehow got into Trump saying our airports are like a 3rd world country. It then turned to how Trump refused to pay a lot of his workers, because he just was not satisfied with their work.

What I found most interesting was the question on race and police brutality. Clinton said that she believes race remains a significant challenge in our country. Race determines too much, like where certain people live, and the education they get. Clinton brought up a lot of good points when she said she believes we have to restore the trust between police, and citizens. Cops should use force only when necessary, and everyone should be respected by the law, and everyone should respect the law. Trump went on to say that he thinks we need “Law and Order” in our country. Trump claimed that he supports the “stop and frisk” movement, which was declared unconstitutional for racial profiling. Hillary Clinton went on to say we should show pride in our black communities and our black churches and our black businesses. The debate went more into about Obama and how Trump did not think that he was an American citizen, which I personally find pretty racist.

I think Trump started the debate on top, but Hillary ended up being the true winner. I think Hillary said the things that Americans, and myself, wanted to hear. I am genuinely scared for our country's future.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
