The Final(s) Straw

My break-up with classes.

With finals just ending, I’m finally (no pun intended) free to use my brain and my time how I’d like. I expected to love this, but have already felt rather lost in my two days post-exams—so I thought I’d take a moment to reflect.

I came to realize that I love finals period.

I’m sorry, what? Did I just think those words? Am I delusional? Intoxicated? Surprisingly not. I thrive during finals period and now I’m stuck in this weird limbo without them; unsure of what to do with myself and my time, purposeless almost.

What am I supposed to do now when I go to a coffee shop and order too many lattes, if not continue to click through endless PowerPoint slides? My Netflix-ing feels undeserved now that it isn’t a chaser for hours of textbook reading. Where’s my focus if not on my exam and study schedule? What happened to the high that comes from finishing another chapter? I’m floundering here.

I’m going to take a leap here and compare this to a relationship. Now that I’ve broken up with college for the summer, I’m not quite sure who I am outside of school and exams. It’s a little scary actually. Did I really commit myself that much to University that I lost pieces of myself? Unfortunately, I have to say yes. But now I have this wonderful, terrifying chance to take the next four months of no classes, and the most free-time I can remember having in years, to re-discover who I am and what I love to do.

Maybe I’ll read more like I used to. Or take up a new dance class. Or another job. Who knows? Certainly not me. While I feel a bit too lost (and bored) for my liking right now, I’m excited to have this time to re-create myself, and am hoping, hoping, hoping, that my newfound self can carry into next semester and not become lost amidst my studies again. It’s too early to know what my balance is yet, but I’m hell-bent on finding it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
