Throughout the '90s and the early 2000s, rock and roll and pop were the popular genres of music listened to by teens and young adults. Artists such as Britney Spears and Christina Agulera were at their prime in the entertainment industry. Today, these genres are still a big hit with the youth of today's generation; however, hip hop, a genre that is enjoyed by many people, is making a fast comeback.
Today, artists like Drake and Kanye West are the most talked about, their albums are the most awaited, and their style is an inspiration. A genre of music that was rooted from black teenagers trying to get their voices heard and their messages across now envelopes an entire world of issues and is used by a diverse range of voices around the world. When rap was first making an appearance into the world of music, early rappers used their voices to express the frustration they dealt with because of the oppression they faced due to their skin color. Early rappers like Ice Cube and Dr. Dre used their music to express the discrimination they felt by the police and the media.
Today the world of rap encompasses an entire range of issues. Artists like Macklemore and Ryan Lewis use their music to spread awareness about equality while artists like Drake and Kanye use it to bring attention to personal problems and even fashion.In todays entertainment industry, rap isn't the only form of urban culture making a break into society, with shows like "Empire" and movies like "Straight Outta Compton," we are given a glimpse into the lifestyle of Urban culture.
"Straight Outta Compton" gave us an inside look into how and why the artists Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Eazy E started their journey into the music industry. Even though most of us knew the history of their journey, the movie gave us an either greater sense of gratitude and a greater sense of realization for what rap music is all about. FOX Network's show "Empire" gives us an even greater glimpse into the making of hiphop music. The shows given many hits with music that is enjoyed by a variety of people and age groups.
Hip hop music isn't the only thing that urban culture has contributed to society. Fashion and style is another hit amongst the youth of todays generation. Urban street style is seen today on many teens and young adults and is the highlight go many fashion blogs. Urban fashion is taking over the fashion industry. Walk into any store that the youth of today shop at and you will be sure to find some type of hiphop inspired clothing.
Urban culture has expanded into the many different cultures in society and is at its most prominent right now. Many people are embracing the fashion and music it offers and are making it apart of their lives.
