As you get ready to move in again for college, it becomes hard to remember all of the essentials and important items that you need to bring along with you.
Here are the few that I recommend to incoming freshman since I guarantee that they will slip your mind while packing.
1. Bring a strong, durable fan.
While a fan may sound like something that many people remember to bring, it is important that you invest in a sturdy fan for your dorm room. Many colleges do not have great air conditioning in the dorms, and even if they do, the rooms can get extremely hot during the warmer weather. A clip on fan for your bed is also a great investment, since your roommate may not prefer the cooler air as much as you may.
2. Spend the extra money on comfortable bedding.
It is essential that you live in a comfortable bed during your year away from home, especially if you typically sleep in a bed that is as soft as mine is. In order to avoid bedbugs and prevent yourself from sleepless nights, purchase a nice mattress topper and mattress pad. To go from a full or queen plush bed to a camp, twin sized mattress, you may as well invest in your comfort. Spend a little more than you typically would on your bedding, especially since it is where you'll be spending a majority of your time...watching Netflix.
3. If you are short, you need a step stool.
You have no idea how much this will come in handy. I set my bed pretty high when I moved in, and I had to jump to get into my bed most nights. If you are on the shorter side, you surely need to get one. Go to Target or Bed Bath & Beyond for a cheap one. I promise it will save you when you need it.
4. Purchase a mat for your floor.
In order to keep the floor from getting dirty and prevent difficult cleanups, it is essential to buy either a floor mat or a rug for right under your bed. The floors can get cold in the morning and therefore, you do not want to step on a freezing ground.
5. You need a Swiffer.
Get rid of the idea of purchasing a broom or a dust pan- purchasing a Swiffer is the way to go. You can quickly change the sheet when it gets too dirty, and you can use it to clean up dust and crumbs from difficult spaces to reach.
6. Buy a laundry basket that you can pick up easily.
When hauling all of your dirty clothing downstairs, make sure you have a basket that you can easily transport, especially if your dorm does not have an elevator. It is also smart to buy a bag that has a pouch on the side for detergent or dryer sheets since it can become difficult to hold everything at once.
7. You will need a first-aid kit one time or another.
As inevitable as it is, you will most likely get a cut or two at school, and it is inevitable that you will stay healthy during the winter seasons. Purchase cough syrup, band-aids, and a thermometer- they will surely come in handy.
8. Make yourself at home.
Buy a tapestry, nice sheets for your bed, some pretty string lights, and hang up pictures. You will be spending more time in your room than you think, and therefore it is important that you feel as comfortable and "at home" as possible.
