The Odyssey- Finals Week: The Stress Awakens

As the end of the semester approaches, people get excited. Christmas gets closer, and it's almost time for a much needed break. However, something that is usually pushed to the back of our minds is finals week. We focus on the amazing break in our future, and forget about the terrifying tests that come before it. As this semester comes to a close, there are several things you need to keep in mind. For everyone taking finals, this is for you.

1. Study

While this may seem like a simple concept, most people don't do it. Many students believe that if they listen in class, they will pass the final. However, this is college. If you want good grades, you have to study, pay attention in class, and work hard.

2. Go to class

Another obvious thought, going to class will help you pass the final. By going to class, you're learning, not only the material, but also the homework assignments. If you want to pass the final (and the class), then you need to actually go to class.

3. Stay awake in class

Even if you only got 3 hours of sleep, do your best to stay awake in class. You're not going to learn anything by falling asleep during a lecture. We've all had those days where we dozed off in class, but keep yourself awake! If you find yourself falling asleep in class a lot, find a trick to keep yourself awake. Whether it's the old rubber band trick, or getting up and splashing cold water on your face, you need to stay awake.

4. Write everything down

Have an assignment due soon? Write it down. Have a test that you need to study for? Write it down. Need to meet with your professor? Write it down. If you forget things easily, then pick out one specific book to write everything down in. As finals approach, the homework is loaded down, and one person can't remember everything.

5. Participate in class

When you participate in class, you will retain more information. Therefore, if you want to do better in a particular class, participate. Not only does this help with learning the material, but it also convinces the teacher that you care about the class. If you get a 69% in the class, the teacher is more likely to round it up to a 70% if they know you actually tried in the class.

6. Study

As previously mentioned, you need to study if you want to pass. I've repeated this tip because it is so important. In order to get a good grade on the final, study, study, study!!! If you don't study, you could fail the test. If you do study, you could pass with flying colors. Take the time, and open your textbook. It'll be worth it.

While these tips don't guarantee you a good grade, they increase your chances of passing. Even if you can guess pretty good on tests, you need to put in the effort. If you aren't even going to try, then why are you here? College is about gaining knowledge, so, look at your books, listen to your professors, and gain some new knowledge! Good luck with finals everyone!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
