The Dork In All Of Us

"Ugh, you're such a dork!"

The Dork In All Of Us

Hasn’t it ever happened to you that you start talking about something and everyone stares at you like you’re some sort of freak and they call you a dork? Well, for me, it happens all the time. All of my friends call me a dork at least once a day. I used to feel so embarrassed and used to think it was the worst thing ever that all of my friends called me a dork. However, I came to the conclusion that everyone is a dork, even when they don’t show it. First, it is important to define what I mean when I say “dork.” For me, a dork is not someone who everyone considers weird and has no friends. For me, a dork is someone who’s not afraid to show they’re not so cool side. A dork enjoys being alone, even though they may or may not be good in social situations. Dorks know what they excel at and tend to stick to those skills and activities. Also, they tend to talk about them somewhat constantly. Dorks enjoy new knowledge, and enjoy discussions about new topics or having arguments of recent news going on around them. Lastly, dorks don’t mind other dorks… Just as long as they are their same type of dork.

With that being said, doesn’t that mean we’re all sort of dorks in our own ways? We all have something we enjoy that isn’t “cool” to someone else. We all get awkward in some type of social activity that is not within our comfort, like talking to that cute guy/girl you just met, or at a job interview you really want. And don’t we all just love doing what we’re good at and hate trying to be doing some sport we’ve never tried or hang out with people we don’t really know? Also, we are all dorks because we all love our Googling. People google the weirdest things, but to someone who googles conspiracy theories on a daily basis probably thinks that’s pretty normal until they ask someone who doesn’t know anything about conspiracies.

However, if you talk to someone who’s just as obsessed as you are with conspiracy theories, then it’s the most normal conversation.

Everyone has that not-so-cool thing that they love doing. The only difference is that some of us don’t care to show it, and some of us dread people finding out. However, it seems normal that if everyone knew that we’re all dorks, people wouldn’t be so ashamed of showing their inner dorks.

So embrace your inner dork and everyone is a dork in their own ways…

Dork away!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
