Comic book giants, Marvel and DC, have long been playing tug-of-war for the top spot in their respective market.
In this “golden age of television” that we’re in, the debate over which show is the best show overall, and best within a specific genre, has grown to be a heated debate by many. This is no different in the realm of superheroes.
Marvel and DC have maintained their status quo as the head honchos of the superhero world, and that dominance has extended all the way onto the small screen.
The battle for the title of “best superhero show” is a topic that has started to heat up discussion boards, YouTube comments, and Facebook comments alike, searching for the answer to this vary question.
So, what show can rightfully call itself #1?
As a fan of both comic franchises, and an avid viewer of all things superheroes, here is the answer you have been waiting for...
5. "Arrow"
"Arrow" starts off our list at spot five. Many will argue and try and explain why "Arrow" is their favorite show and how important it was to this current generation of quality hero shows as a reason to justify their claims. Say what you want, but the reality is that while "Arrow"is a great show, it has lost some of the excitement and thrill that first made viewers fall in love with it. The storyline of each season has been interesting enough, and there has been many shocking moments along the way, but "Arrow" has lost some of its “juice” – for lack of a better term. The reason "Arrow" still remains a solid show is because of the emphasis put on the internal affairs of each character. Somehow, some way, every character seems to have a new interesting way to grow and mature as a person, and while many shows do a good job of this, "Arrow" in particular does one of the best jobs. This season saw "Arrow" take on a lighter atmosphere, and that bodes well for the future of the series. We’ll see what Greg Berlanti and co. have in store for us.
4. "Gotham"
"Gotham" took a huge risk taking on the folklore of the Dark Knight and his compadres. As we have seen, there have been many iterations of Batman in film, and there have been great successes and great failures. As far as the small screen, there has only been one standout Batman series – "Batman: The Animated Series." The 1960’s live action series was a humorous attempt at bringing the story of the Bat to life, and was a treat for that time period, but at the end of the day, there was never a mature, high-quality rendition of the tales of Gotham City.
Enter "Gotham."
"Gotham" tells the tale of a young Bruce Wayne, Jim Gordon, and the how Gotham came to be the city that needed saving.
"Gotham" does a great job of making things matter. As weird as that sounds, the truth is, it is assumed a vast majority of the viewers of "Gotham" already know the basis of Bruce Wayne’s backstory, and many fans know the stories of the other various characters in the show as well. Because of this prior knowledge, the importance of many of the stories told in "Gotham" should seem boring, redundant, and unnecessary, but it is the complete opposite.
"Gotham" has given the Batman brand a breath of fresh air with new takes on old characters, a great cast, and thanks to a great film crew, has created a unique atmosphere on the show that truly feels like Gotham City has come to life right off the pages of the comic books.
3. "Agents of Shield"
After the first half of season one, many people started to give up on "Agents of Shield" but the faithful few, like myself, who stuck around are reaping the benefits. Three seasons later, I can wholeheartedly say that this is one of the better shows on television, regardless of genre. The growth that this show has seen from season to season is rare, and the finales that this show produces are in a class by themselves. "Agents of Shield" has done of great job of living up to the pressure and expectations placed upon them as being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and if Disney/Marvel continue to improve on past seasons, this show will soon be atop this list.
2. "Flash"
Many websites hail "Flash"as the cream of the crop when it comes to the hero genre. While this series has enjoyed two great seasons, it falls just short of being named numero uno.
"Flash" has captured the attention of viewers all over and for good reason. Unlike many other shows that go into supernatural and fantastical areas, this series does not worry about its realism, or its maturity. "Flash"is serious when need be, but for the most part keeps a lighthearted, quirky feeling throughout the show, much like that of the comics.
"Flash" is unique in the way it presents itself, and while there are those who crucify the show for its lack of depth of the characters, and some who feel that the actors and actresses are inconsistent, they could not be any more wrong.
Everything about this show exemplifies what bringing a comic to life should look like, and the huge improvement from a great season one to an even greater season two shows that the best is yet to come.
Once again, Greg Berlanti has us on the edge of our seats and twiddling our thumbs as we anxiously wait for the return of Barry Allen in season three.
And number one goes to ... "Daredevil"
Marvel’s "Daredevil" is the culmination of what a superhero series can and should be. No other show comes close to what Marvel has achieved with this masterpiece.
By utilizing Netflix as their medium for this series, Marvel has been able to approach a dark, gritty, realistic angle that no other hero series, or even any other hero movie has approached. Nolan’s Batman trilogy is the closest in comparison to the dark tone that "Daredevil" possesses.
There are no words to describe the greatness of this show, simply put, you need to watch it. There is no weak point in this show.
For the hardcore fans, like myself, the atmosphere from the comics is all there, the darkness, the confusion, the struggles of Matt Murdock trying to balance his alter ego, it’s all there. For the casual viewer, within the first few episodes, the storytelling will encapsulate you. The cast is impeccable, and Charlie Cox’s "Daredevil" is one for the ages.
If you haven’t already seen this show, give it a try, it is truly one of the best experiences you will ever have with a TV series.
You will experience love, failure, success, heartbreak, all throughout this show, sometimes even in one episode. Its simple a masterpiece. I don’t know you did it Marvel, but you made a perfect show, and also gave us one of the best fight scenes in film, or televisions history.
If you don't believe me, I’ll leave you with this:
