Our generation is a generation of greed and denial we don’t realize we will be needed. There is not a set task at hand like our grandparents who were able to see what they needed to do: win the war and bring economic stability. We, however, need to change the perception of life. We need to make a choice and move away from nihilism and regain a sense of community and work. The change will only come when we learn to appreciate hard work and each other. We must learn to come together and put aside our differences for a new world that will, in the long run, benefit us all.
Because today nihilism no longer can last, otherwise the world will be destroyed. We have no room left for only self-interest and greed. We are the generation that has to stop the breaking point. We must be able to change and we must realize that change is needed. We can no longer just be, take and do only what is best for our individual needs. Our generation needs to step away from focusing only on our own generation and bring our world together, beginning by unifying the differences in generations. If we can bring people together in our own communities than we can use the ideas of the generations that see us just as tech-savvy teens who know nothing about the real world.
We are however a generation that is accepting and loving, and wants change and to be different but this isn't easy. What can we change? How can we change it? How do we fix our problems without upsetting the other generations and their perspectives on life? I think the only way to solve all these factors is to be the unifying factor, the generation that brings everyone together. In today's world, we need everyone, young, old, all political backgrounds, all races, all religions to unify to solve a problem that is greater than all our differences. A problem although not visibly concrete could destroy the world as we know it, climate change.
There is no concrete problem at hand but the one we face is larger than that of our grandparents as there may be no future world for our children unless we change our habits. We must find the problem and come together to change all that we have been taught. We may need to conquer climate change, overpopulation and equalize wealth. But I think we have a bigger task at hand, changing the outcome of the choice. We must no longer just live for instant gratification and greed but we must work for the common good. Our American generation has the ability to change the world around us, and to help others not just in war, but in unifying. Which I hope will lead to a discussion on how the world is physically changing and how we “lazy tech savvy teens” can use our knowledge, our love and our power to stop climate change.
