Twas the month before Christmas, and all through the land, cheery people prepared for Santa to land. Decorations were put up with great care in hopes their house would look the best that year. The land was quiet as Starbucks received the most controversial cups we’ve ever seen. The people strolled in one by one, stating that these new holiday cups were just no fun. The Catholics protested and complained, stating that it was Starbucks that needed Jesus, to be saved. While the Catholics were mad, the Jews were fine even, though the reminisce of a menorah they could not find.
OK, people lets be real, the entirety of this cup situation has really been blown way out of proportion. I am Catholic and I associate myself with the Catholic Church and in no way am I offended by the fact that Starbucks went with a simple design for their holiday cup this year. Christ is the true meaning of CHRISTmas. It’s not about how many gifts you receive or who decorates their house the best or even the color of a damn cup. It’s supposed to be a time of thanks and celebration for the savior who gave his life for us.
Shoving my religion down your throat is not my intention. My issue is that December is filled with holidays. There is Hanukah, Cuanza, Saint Nicolas Day, Christmas and Ramadan. All of these religions, yet you never hear complaints about how all stores decorate for Christmas forgetting about their holiday. Howard Schultz, the chairman of Starbucks, isn’t even Catholic… he’s Jewish. The cups could have been blue, opposed to the traditional red. While I fear that if a change like that is made people would overreact even more than we are now. Imagine celebrating a holiday other than Christmas; that’s outrageous!
I fear for our generation. We are very lucky to live in a world where we can protest our beliefs and fight for what’s right. What’s sad is our inability to fight for what really matters. We are waging wars on cups instead focusing on the true meaning of Christmas. We’re waging wars on the poor instead of trying to end poverty. We would rather hate thy neighbor instead of embrace a different culture with open arms. In today’s day and age, I believe that we live in one of the most cultural societies and yet the most closed minded.
People are so quick to pull the race or religion card, yet no one is willing to call out wrong doings. Whether a black man kills a white man or a white man kills a black man, it doesn’t matter it’s still wrong and you broke the law. Racial profiling because of someone’s apparent religion or skin color is wrong and we all know it. I worry for our country, especially if our biggest concern is a damn cup. If you need a cup to justify Christmas for you, it’s not Starbucks that needs Jesus, it’s you.
So for everyone offended by a red cup, buzz off and go buy a Keurig. You can put your coffee in whatever cup your heart desires. As for you Starbucks, I happen to enjoy your red cups so have a happy holiday season and drink on.
