There are many perks to having a sarcastic personality. You are normally quick with comebacks and have the ability to mock any situation. Not to mention, your friends always turn to you when they are down in the dumps and in need of a serious pick-me-up.
Coming from a sarcastic person, I take pride in this quality and flaunt it all the time. Sometimes at inappropriate times, which most sarcastic people can relate to.
However, there can be many downsides to having this excessive amount of cynicism that every sarcastic person has experienced at least once in their life.
1. No one takes you seriously.
Whenever you try to be sincere, your friends never believe you. For example, if you compliment a friend, they may respond with something like “shut up” or “yeah I’m going to go change now.” You then try to explain that you were being sincere; however, they are still hesitant to believe you.
2. You have made a situation worse by making a sarcastic comment.
We have all been there. Whether someone is upset or in the middle of a huge fight, you just tried to lighten the mood. While you are able to cheer someone up 99 percent of the time, you occasionally miss the mark, making everything worse.
3. People don’t get your jokes.
Ugh! Uncultured folk are the absolute worst. Making a joke that is clearly funny is the worst in a room full of people who don’t understand. It takes an intelligent to find the humor in your joke.
4. You have unintentionally offended someone with your remark.
Whoops! Now you have to do the one thing a sarcastic person hates doing. Retracting. You have to go back and explain that was not what you meant. This can lead back to point number two and can make a situation worse.
While there are some negatives to being sarcastic, the pros outweigh the cons tremendously. Sarcastic people care the most about the people they love, not necessarily everything else, but they can always be counted on.
