Life was normal for me, a good ol’ water drinker- until I began to notice everybody around me was a caffeine crazed coffee addict and started to wonder what I was missing out on. Ironically, I come from a coffee obsessed family. My parents are some of the worst coffee addicts I know, but I could just never get on the coffee wave. I was perfectly fine with not being a coffee drinker until I came to college and repeatedly heard that coffee is the only way to survive life in college. Even in high school, kids my age were obsessed with it; but the necessity of coffee in a college student’s life is a whole new level. From the many all nighters in a row you will pull because of that stats exam to the 8 a.m. lab you regret signing up for, coffee is seemingly the one source of energy that is essential to keep a busy college student functioning.
Although my parents were big coffee drinkers, I was never allowed to drink coffee even when I entered high school. Therefore, I didn’t get my first sip until I was 17… I know, crazy. However, I was greatly disappointed with my first taste of coffee. I was expecting greatness considering how hyped up the drink is. Instead, it’s bland taste and harsh flavor threw me off, making me regret ever trying it. And don’t worry, I tried adding plenty of creamer and sugar and it did nothing. After my second attempt, a caramel frappuccino from Starbucks, I was once again let down. Even when masked in the sugar and syrups packed inside a cold frappuccino, I could still taste the coffee in there and I hated it. Something in me just cannot handle the taste of coffee and I will truly never understand why people are so obsessed with it.
Not liking coffee has its downsides, like not being able to relate to the “But first, coffee” posts my friends reblog or the excitement of getting a Starbucks gift card for my birthday. Besides the awkward “I-actually-don’t-really-like-coffee” conversations I have to have whenever I get invited to grab coffee, or sometimes being left out of a conversation between friends about their indescribable love for coffee, most of the time, I’m very okay with not liking it. From the grouchiness to eye twitching, seeing how people around me cannot function in the mornings without it actually makes me grateful that I don’t depend on it.
Even though I may not be like the typical college student that lives off coffee, I’m a proud member of the H2O gang. And for those out there who also hate coffee, we’re in this together.
