If you're from the Cleveland area, you know that there is no shortage of things to do downtown during the summer time. However, many people seem to forget about the wonderful park system we have. I admit that I don't usually spend a bunch of time outside, but this summer has been different. Here's a few ways to get outdoors this summer and explore beautiful parks that are right around the corner:
1. Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
Going to the zoo isn't just for little kids, or at least I don't think so. It's a great way to explore wildlife across the world without having to go too far. If you're looking for a bargain, the zoo is free on Mondays for anyone that has a 441 zipcode.
2. Bike rides on the Erie Canal tow path.
I had no idea this even existed until a few months ago. It's definitely one of the nicest trails that I have been on and it's a great way to spend an afternoon. It has several historical stops along the path where the Erie Canal used to flow and some of the infrastructure is still in place. There is also an exit along the stop that has a Winking Lizard and Mitchell's Ice Cream for a bite to eat.
3. Trip to the beach.
Ok, so we all know that Lake Erie isn't nearly as exciting as living near an ocean, but it is a lot closer. Hunnington Beach still has a lot to offer and its still fun to lay on the beach on a nice sunny day. It's still on my summer to do list since it is so close to home.
4. Kayak/canoe rentals.
I've never done this, but I know that there are places around the Cleveland area to go kayaking and canoeing. This is something available in many of the small lakes surrounding the Cleveland along with several rivers. I believe that the rentals are relatively and definitely worth trying if you are looking for a different kind of outdoor adventure.
5. Picnics.
There is no shortage of areas to have a picnic in the Cleveland Metroparks. Almost every park facility has some sort of picnic area complete with grills and tables. I definitely plan to take advantage of a day at the beach followed by a picnic in the park.
Just because you might be stuck in Cleveland this summer doesn't mean you can't find ways to explore the great outdoors. There is definitely always more to explore. I never spent that much time outdoors, but since I've started to this summer I've realized what I have been missing out on. It's great to get out there and experience new areas of your own city that you didn't even know existed. I look forward to exploring Cleveland even more as the summer goes on.
