Friendship, it's really quite simple, isn't it. I mean at this point in our lives, right? If you're a twenty-something year old like I am, you've spent roughly the last 20 or so years of your life creating friendships. And when I say creating I don't mean the ones on Facebook, I mean the real true friendships.
Besides family, friendship is one of the single most important things in life. Where would you be without friends? Just the same as where would you be without family, they go hand in hand. They are important.
As I get older, I cherish friendship so much more than I ever had. I made a point to talk to my friends at least once a week, most of them I talk to once a day. I try not to let life and time get between us.
I realize as our lives start to truly begin, that life will happen. Job schedules will differ and our time to spend together will lessen but that doesn't mean our time together has to. Right?
Growing up makes the friendship that much more fun. Opportunities of what you can do together become ultimately endless. From nights in the city to weeks on vacation and everything in between, when you're twenty-something friendship is just getting good, great actually.
This year alone I went on two awesome vacations with some of my best friends. That's what makes growing up and growing friendships so great, all the things you can do with your friends. Whether it be eating too much pizza, taking too many shots or getting too competitive in a game of mini golf; they're memories you'll remember forever.
As I get older I value the meaning of friendship more. I see the people who don't value it the way I do and I value their friendship a little less. I see the people who love me and value me as much as I do them and I value them even more.
I can't wait till my life really starts with all the amazing people around me who are my friends and also my family supporting me. The reason I can't wait for that is because of friendship, I know how much better it will get and how amazing it will be.
Friends become family eventually because at some point you stop being able to tell the difference. Hey, I have friends now that my mom already likes better than me; that's okay because sometimes I like them better than me too.
Merriam-Webster defines friendship as the state of being friends, the relationship between friends, a friendly feeling or attitude, and kindness or help given to someone. To me, friendship is love and support. It's a shoulder to cry on. It's somebody to laugh with. It's someone to go through life with. Friendship is so many things but to me it's one of the best things.
"There are good ships, there are wood ships. There are ships that sail the sea, but the best ship is friendship and may they always be."
