As the year comes to a close, it has become customary to look back upon all the finest moments of the year. Many popular websites, including YouTube and Facebook, practice this "year in review" through the "best moments of this year through pictures" and the infamous "YouTube rewind." Within the last decade, a sub-category of the "year in review" has spawned, focusing on the music of said year. Approximately five years ago, a YouTube artist branded as DJ Earworm made a mashup of all the pop songs for 2009. The video became so viral that he's continued mashing up every following year's popular music into one massive music video. A duet known as Us The Duo has done similar compilations, as seen in their "Top Hits of 2014 in 2.5 minutes." Pop music always takes the spotlight, so it's time to have a tribute to another widely influential genre of our time. Here are some of the best and worst rap songs of 2015.
The Best:
"Flex (Ooh Ooh Ooh)" -- Rich Homie Quan
First gaining popularity during the summer, Flex quickly became one of the top 25 in the hip hop genre on Itunes. Apart from just being a catchy song, Quan's music video has spawned the popular dance move of "Hitting the Quan." This song is essentially a summation of all that is popular hip hop. A catchy beat, lyrics that you can't totally understand, and a music video that cost a fortune.
"Blessings" -- Big Sean (ft. Drake, Kanye West)
Combining three of the most popular icons in rap almost guarantees a great song. Their abilities as lyricists are very much shown through this piece. If you ever want to hear five minutes of real talk then this should be what you listen to.
"G.O.M.D" -- J. Cole
Ever since his first album "Cole World," J. Cole has come in and out of the spotlight. However, in his most recent album, "Forest Hills Drive," he has gained massive popularity and is now beginning to be revered as an icon in rap. Although this song came out in late December of 2014, it deserves a spot as one of the best for this year. Most of J. Cole's "Forest Hills Drive" has remained consistently popular throughout this year.
The Worst:
"Jumpman" -- Drake & Future
A couple listens to this song and it gets tiring. Even the first time around, it's mediocre at best. Come on Drake, don't associate with Future.
"CoCo" -- O.T. Genesis
The only reason why this song gained even a sliver of popularity is because of how hilariously bad it is. Let's be honest, did anyone listen to this song because they thought it oozed lyrical genius? Or was good to dance to?
"Beg For It" -- Iggy Azalea
I cannot express how much her voice annoys me. I could care less what the song sounds like since all I can concentrate on is her nasally, whiny voice.
