Going away to school has its benefits. You get away from home life, gain a little sense of independence, and meet totally different people. You have a chance to start anew. But there are also many positives to staying home for the duration of your college career, and I'm here to tell you what those are.
1. You don't actually have to bid farewell to your bed.
It's always a good laugh to see the ever-so-dramatic posts and tweets about how much your friends are dreading leaving their beloved beds. You sit there and smile to yourself knowing you don't share that same dreaded feeling, and are then comforted knowing that when you go to sleep that night, it's not in some small, uncomfortable twin sized bed with another person 20 feet away from you.
2. You still eat real food.
Sorry to all my away-at-college friends, but you're missing out on the good stuff: home cooked meals. They truly are like no other. That barely edible cafeteria food that your friends are stuck eating for months at a time almost makes you feel bad for them, but then you realize you're too busy scarfing down your mom's homemade lasagna and you suddenly forget all your troubles.
3. You can still easily keep in touch with those close high school friends who also chose to stay home.
Leaving for college for months at a time definitely creates a gap between you and your commuting friends, so staying home for school eliminates that issue altogether. Although you may be busier than you were in high school, coffee breaks and brunch dates are always something that can be squeezed in, now and then.
4. You don't have to miss any major family events (although sometimes you wish you had the excuse to).
Whether it's Mother's Day, your little sibling's first day of school, or your dad's birthday, you're always there to make it. You can spend your loved one's special days alongside them and not feel guilty into missing important events. Although you sometimes do wish you had an excuse to miss some things, family time is always something to hold valuable and close.
5. You don't have to spend hours driving or on a plane to go back and forth from college and home.
Luckily, your college is within a few towns of you (more or less), so it doesn't take you hours to visit home or drive back to campus. It's nice knowing you have a comforting place with a filled fridge and a nice bed to return to right after a tough day of classes.
Make the most of going to a commuter college, 'cause these four years will fly by quick and you'll wanna do it all over again!
