Onism at its finest.

The Art Of Being Singular
Jeremy Harper

Have you ever considered what it would be like to be someone else? All of us have a natural urge to experience more than what we are, and this is because we are finite.

You will never experience everything life has to offer. There are an infinite ways we as humans can participate in this funny little game we call life. Every human is different and, therefore, every human experiences the world differently. If this didn't make you feel incomplete, then take a moment to also consider the different time periods. We can only experience the time period in which we are born. We will never experience the past, unless through the medium of a biased textbook. The future is a giant blank canvas that we will never see filled in.

What's even more intriguing is that some of us have a difficult time accepting the fact that we are limited in this manner. The awareness that we are stuck in only one body, being forced to only experience one form of reality, can truly mess with our psyches. Being singular can be frustrating at times.

Being able to travel and see the world is even a limited option to most of us. Even if we have the money or means to travel, it is physically impossible to see every facet of the Earth. Everyone lives in a different location on Earth. Two people living in the same city will have two separate experiences of the city. The places they eat, the people they come to know, and the dreams they pursue. Experiencing the planet in its entirety is impossible.

Now, consider the people you know and love. Every individual knows different people, loves different people, and hates different people. Even one person can be perceived differently depending on one's personality compatibility. You will never come to know even three-fourths of the world's populous. Doesn't this leave you curious about the concept of soulmates and lovers? How can anyone expect to find the perfect match when there are so many options and potential pairings?

Let's turn our attention towards music now. Music is a fascinating art form that can mend hearts and inspire minds. You could listen to music for your entire life and never listen to every song ever made. Books and movies are another good topic to discuss, when considering what we won't be able to accomplish in life. Similarly to music, you could read your entire lifetime away and still not even come close to reading every book ever written. There are fewer movies out there in the world, but to watch them all would take a lifetime. What's very fascinating about books and movies is that they are simplified expressions of life that allow the readers or viewers to have a glimpse in on other realities. This is why being well read is so worthwhile.

With all of this said, don't you think there has to be more going on here than what we see? Our consciousnesses may be connected, for all we know. After all, we do experience the same fundamental emotions, it's just that these feelings are triggered by varying scenarios. What if we are plural, rather than singular?

As one final thought, I would like you to look up at the sky above you. What if there is life out there? What if humanity is able to expand into the depths of the universe one day to discover its truths? Maybe focusing on what we are able to accomplish in our lives is important, but taking some time to simply ponder the enigma that we call life can be just as important.

Life is a mystery, after all.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
