I'm sure I'm not the only person in college who doesn't feel like an adult. It's not like the transformation into adulthood happens overnight. No, instead there's this awkward phase where you realize you have to schedule your own appointments and spend money on shampoo instead of a tub of Ben and Jerry's.
"We're all adults here," my mother said to my sister and me. Little did she know I was laughing to myself. I can't even manage my time correctly. I accidentally watch too many episodes of "The Office" too late to realize that I didn't finish my paper or take a shower. One time, I made Easy Mac wrong. Yes, I am aware that the word "easy" is in it. Long story short, instructions were unclear.
Has the thought, "I can't adult today" ever crossed your mind? If so, just know you're not alone. Also remember that you didn't fail at making Easy Mac. But In all seriousness, it's scary to think in a couple of years it is possible my friends or even I might get married and have children. When you think about it, we spend the first half of our lives wishing to be older. We want more freedom, independence, and control. Then all of a sudden, it's your 18th birthday and technically you're an adult. From that moment on, the idea of being an adult almost scares you.
"How do I do the laundry?"
"How do I get an oil change?"
"How do I handle my bank account?"
"...So you fill hot water up to the line, wait a couple minutes, and then add the cheese packet?"
At times it seems like a lot, but I'm doing my best. I get little victories which make me happy like ordering my first checks, going grocery shopping by myself, and using my own money to get necessities. Other times I give myself a pat on the back for putting on pants or getting out of bed. Small steps are still steps. Adulthood reminds people of responsibilities and that's why people like to run away from it. It is so easy to get stressed out from multiple obligations you have going on in life. I would like to think I am a responsible person. On the other hand, when my mother came to visit me at my dorm last week she was surprised to see my plant was still alive. Other than responsibilities, we have to learn how to make good decisions. This one, I will admit I am not the best at.
So I haven't exactly gotten the "adult" thing down yet. It makes me question everything constantly. What am I doing? Why am I doing it? Should I continue doing it? If not, what do I do? Once again it seems that instructions are unclear. Obviously, there are no instructions on how to become a proper adult. It's quite clear that life isn't anything like making Easy Mac either. Life is way more complex. That's what makes it interesting and sometimes challenging. Everything is new at one point. Overtime we pick up on things and soon enough we ace them. It's only a matter of time and experience.
