This weekend my first freshman friends Jenna and Molly came to visit me before heading home to visit their families for the holiday. As we sat around we reminisced about how we all met, the group of girls we lived with freshman year, and all of our crazy memories. While we caught up with how everyone was doing, we slowly compiled a list of the 7 types of friends you should have. I still seek these types of people out in my life today and always find myself gravitating and remembering the original creator of this type of friend in my life.
1) The All In Friend
The all in friend is a must in your group. This is my Jenna, the friend who made every trip or birthday an exciting adventure. When we went to our first college parties and trekked to Salt Lake for our first concert Jenna went all out. We created costumes, outfits, and planned how much of an adventure we would have. Her excitement rubs off on you. You find yourself excited and having a blast at a concert you would have never gone to simply because Jenna is having a blast. The Jenna of your group is all in for your friendship too and that's the best part. Jenna will never let me not her be her friend and I'm grateful that I have my all in friend for life.
2) The Comeback Friend
I will be the first to admit that I suck at comebacks, always have and always will. Molly was my comeback friend and thank God for that. Wherever we would be, Molly was the one to make sure that no one was going to out-sass us. I could always count on Molly to have a witty comeback ready to throw out to whoever needed knocked off their pedestal. Everyone needs someone to have their back when they're going out and having a Molly in my life has saved me from so many awkward moments.
3) The Shape-shifter
The shape shifter friend is vital to a great friend group, especially freshman year. This person can evaluate the group and knows exactly what kind of friend that they need to be for each person. Our shape shifter knew that I always need reassured that it was OK to get out and have fun and that I would still be in bed by ten. He knew that Jen sometimes needed calmed down and could fire witty comebacks as well.
4) The Grandma
The Grandma is as literal as it sounds. Our grandma friend knitted and showed up with cookies more than once. She was always sleeping and walking around with a blanket around her shoulders. To convince grandma to go out and have a good time was an accomplishment, but we always knew that grandma would take care of us.
5) The Karen
If you haven't watched the Dane Cook video about the Karen friend then leave this article and look it up on YouTube.
If you have watched then you already get the joke.
6) The Golden Retriever
This is the most loyal friend that you can think of right now. The person you know that would answer your call no matter what and come save the day. But if this person is also probably one the goofiest, funniest, space head that you know then you have yourself a golden retriever friend. Keep this friend in your life always, no matter when they chat your ear off about the same problem they just can't figure out again. The golden retriever friend will love you always and you love them too, despite the drool.
7) The Mom
Let's be real, I'm the mom. I worry constantly and I am the checker. The one friend that is always last in the car because I had to check that the oven was off, that everyone had their phones, wallets, keys, ID, that we all had a drink, that we had a DD, that everyone was in the car, and I could keep going. My mom attitude isn't always out, but it's always there ready to spring into action. I'm the hold me while I cry, stop the fight in the living room, "how do I do laundry?" and round everyone up at the end of the night friend. Good or bad I love my little misfit, freshman year family and I hope they know that Mom loves them.
