FaceTime: I honestly do not know where I would be without it - I mean who really wants to walk down the hall to ask their friend a question, or type out an ~essay~ of a message to their BFF at school hundreds of miles away when they can just FaceTime and save all that effort? Here's a list of the 7 FaceTimes every college kid experiences at least once:
1. Grandparents
We all love our grandparents - but when it comes to FaceTiming, conversations all go the same way: you FaceTime them thinking that if they see you, the conversation will flow better than if you call them, or god forbid, text them. Instead, you end up FaceTiming them while they hold the phone to their ear, thinking you're simply on a phonecall. *Props to those of you whose grandparents have figured out the ~art~ of FaceTiming, in which case, this probably doesn't apply to you.
2. Parents
Every once in a while, you just have that urge to be face to face with your mom and dad. Whether it's as you're on your way to a midterm and you want them to wish you luck, you just finished watching the latest episode of "Scandal" and NEED to discuss it (c'mon, I can't be the only one who watched seasons 1-5 with their parents throughout high school), or you're looking for your mom's advice on your outfit (is this appropriate for a meeting with a professor?), this is one FaceTime that always gets answered, no matter what time of day it is.
3. Siblings
Ah, the sibling FaceTime. On the rare occasion you admit to yourself that you do miss your sibling(s) (despite how annoying they can be at times) you FaceTime them to update them on your life because you can't just walk into their room and bug them or because you're secretly ~scheming~ like you would do if you still lived at home.
4. Home Friends

You always expect to FaceTime your home friends for about 2 minutes, but it never ends up going that way. You can sit there an talk to them for hours without realizing it because you're so used to being able to talk to them throughout the day in high school. You vent and vent, trying to figure out what to do in those desperate situations that you need advice on, but your college friends don't know you well enough to advise you on. These FaceTimes are the ones that always result in you being told exactly what you needed to hear, even when it's not what you wanted. Despite popular belief, hundreds of miles really DO feel like hundreds of miles, even with the ~magic~ of FaceTime.
5. Camp Friends
These FaceTimes haven't really changed much over the years - you're already so used to having to FaceTime because you see each other so rarely throughout the year. These conversations mostly consist of gossip about your other camp friends, asking when you can visit each other, and discussing all the ~drama~ going on in your lives. The only difference between high school and college is coordinating schedules of when you can actually FaceTime (gotta LOVE timezones!).
6. 3am After a Night Out
This is my personal favorite type of FaceTime (mostly because I'm SO guilty of it - shoutout to the real MVP's who answer my calls at 2am or 3am even though they probably shouldn't). These FaceTimes normally happen after a long Thursday or Saturday night out - either in an Uber, in Kaldi's, or waiting for that Domino's delivery. Conversations typically consist of saying how much you miss them, how much you want them to visit, and basically spilling your guts to them about your weekend (let's be real, most of those stories from Mags really shouldn't be repeated on FaceTime at 3am). Despite all of this, these friends will continue to answer your FaceTimes because they know that you are sure to entertain them, and they can DEFINITELY make fun of you later on for whatever you say to them. *Bonus points if you FaceTime MULTIPLE people and they answer.
7. College Friends
You would think that FaceTiming your college friends wouldn't be a thing. Well you would be wrong. No, I'm not talking about FaceTiming them while you're on spring break or in between semesters. I'm talking about the FaceTimes when you're down the hall from each other but are both too lazy to go speak in person, when you don't feel like having to text long paragraphs to update them on who you walked by, to tell them that good tea you heard on your way out of class that morning, or those times when you're walking back from class and trying to avoid having a conversation with anyone around you. These FaceTimes may be the most important ones of all, and despite what anyone might tell you, YES THEY ARE NECESSARY!
No matter which type of FaceTime is your personal favorite, we're all guilty of every type at least once. Now if only someone could figure out how to get Snapchat filters to work while FaceTiming...
