The 6 Struggles of the Curly Haired Girl

Chances are if you opened this article the above picture is 110 percent relatable, because more often than not your hair is the #1 Public Enemy every morning.

Listen up my fellow curlistas (curl sisters)....the following is about to get a little too real...

1) The elusive quest for “the product" that's going to fix it all.

Don't you dare tell me its not out there because it is...somewhere on some shelf in CVS just waiting for me to buy it!

You started this hunt at probably 12 or 13 and its the quest that never ends...If I spend too long in the hair section I look like this. So many choices, so many products and they are all going to defrizz, tame, smooth, curl, luscious what ever my hair. I will buy all of them, anywhere, all the time because I don't care it might work. One day I might come to work and look like Carrie Underwood's hair stylist did my hair. One day? Its going to happen I promise.

2) The "Crunchy" Phase....

Curlista....we've all had this stage, whether we've burned the pictures or not...in MS I rocked some serious Aussie crunch.

During this phase curlistas we foolishly thought hair gel probably from Garnier, Aussie or even Herbal Essences was really giving us the curliest cutest look possible. Reality...we went to school with slick wet heads and tight curls clumped with product. As the day progressed those gorgeous curls were suffocated with product giving us a nice HARD CCrruunncchhyy curl. No one was winning those days.

Gel - 1 Curlistas - 0

3) "Just blow dry it!"

We've all got that one friend who foolishly didn't understand us when we said we have curly hair and we can't get ready in .2 seconds like them with their straight hair. If you want to wait 2hours for my hair to dry that's cool or if you want me to have an unwilling afro today that's also a possibility if we select this option. Just no....blow drying not an option for a curlista.

4) "You'd look so CUTE with straight hair!!"

Do you want to burn my hair repeatedly for 382374289734 hours? Please don't miss one section so I then look I've got an overgrown hedge on the back of my head. Oh yes I just LOVE the sizzle it makes when my hair is wet....and the smell of burning hair? Better smelling than my Neon shampoo by Paul Mitchell....NOT

Straightening your hair takes so many hours and its so horrible for your hair.

Plus....curls are WAY better curlista :)

5) The Poofy Triangle

Oh curlista....This is a dark place. We've all made the fatal mistake of hitting the snooze buttons 11 times on Monday and having 3 minutes to get ready for work. It is during these critical blurry morning breath moments you make the utmost WORST decision possible RE: the curls. You pick up a brush....and you BRUSH YOUR HAIR.

Your curly hair then assumes the position I've fondly nicknamed "The Poofy Triangle" .

Your hair staticy from all the rolling arounds of sleeping expands like The Incredible Hulk at the word brush. Ok maybe not just the word, but as soon as the brush touches your curls....its DONE.

6) Haircuts?

Long layers? Side bangs? Chemical Straighten?

All curlistas make the mistake in thinking they can get a haircut and its going to be noticeable. I remember the distinct phase in middle school of getting "layers".....NOPE. Oh I got long layers let me tell you. Did anyone see them? Nope. My curly hair got super curly and I had a sort of layered curly lasagna look kind of going. Which made me get dangerously close to the poofy triangle.

Not to mention the sweet side bangs I straightened and rocked with my curly hair. That looked...GREAT.

Haircuts are a tease for any curly haired gal.....because once the curls are cut they get curly and any haircut you got is lost in the curly chaos.

Regardless of all of that...we have curly hair my curlistas and curly hair is GORGEOUS even on the occasions it decides to be naughty. Everyone wants curly hair, few fight the battle we fight but many wish to. Love those curls, wear them down or up or half up/down (??) and love them. You look beautiful and so do your curls! Own those curls, because curlista...you look AMAZING :)

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
