Last week, I reached my second decade in life. I'll admit, it feels a bit weird to say that I'm 20 years old. Many of my friends and family members made the comment "You're getting old!" or reassured me with motivational words such as, "It all goes downhill from here." Not only is 20 a weird age because I'm technically an adult but still not there yet (it really does bug me that I can enlist in the army or marines and give my life, but cannot order a drink after a long day if I wanted to), but it's also a weird age because it feels like I should have my sh*t together.
Remember when you were around eight or nine years old and you either met an "older" person or had people in your family that were in college and seemed so together and mature to the point that you considered them an adult? If so, I'm sure you can relate in also experiencing the wake-up call that is adulthood. Let's all be honest with one another, we aren't independent enough yet to really be considered adults. Here are some realities of being a "Grown Up:"
1. You still call your parents to ask if they can transfer money to your bank account.
As a college student, I'm basically broke 24/7 unless my parents bless me with their income. Even with multiple jobs, your money just doesn't seem to be cutting it.
2. You still procrastinate despite the important tasks that are at hand.
Me every Sunday night... procrastination is the enemy as well as the friend. Typically, I'd imagine that adults know how to avoid procrastination and get things done. Which goes to show that I am not one yet.
3. You either live at home, with a roommate, or with luck, got a single.
It isn't a bad thing... but if you're like me, I'm sure that you pictured adults as people who are independent, living on their own, paying their own bills, and kicking ass at life.
4. You still have to prioritize over what is the most important, because you can't afford it all.
It really is difficult to decide between buying food, clothes, or books for school. I think it's safe to say that they are all equally important.
5. You still watch Disney channel
You won't hear any judgement from me. Disney channel used to be the best thing ever and when they have throwback movies or something like the "High School Musical" reunion, it is only right that you mix the present with the past.
6. You call your mom whenever you just don't trust your own decisions
Indecisiveness is a bitch, and it's hard to make the right decision sometimes. However, it seems like mothers, who are actual adults, always know the right thing to do.
