Most colleges offer Admitted Student Weekends. If yours does. Go, you won't regret it.
I'm leaving my small North Carolina city in the fall to go to school in a hippie subsect of Atlanta, GA. Prior to the admitted student's weekend, I was moving 318 miles away from home alone. After the weekend, I am moving 318 miles away to be with 6 of my best friends. Over the course of the weekend, we bonded and we all came into our identities in That Group of Girls, as we were so aptly named.
The Mom Friend
This friend is always prepared. From one of you being hungry to someone getting hurt, they have something to remedy the problem. Eventually, someone will call them mom and they will just accept it. This friend will always make sure that everyone is taken care of.
Your Clone
This friend is so much like you, it can be kind of creepy sometimes, but also you love it. You can laugh at the same jokes, have the same sense of style, and in my case, live 45 minutes from each other with teacher friends that are clones of each other. There are probably a lot of other similarities between the two of you but you have the next four years to figure those out. Your clone knows when something is wrong and they know what to do to help.
The Friend That's Almost Too Cool
This friend is a total badass. They have been alive as long as you have but they have done so many cool things. Again, I say, they are a badass. Just last week I got a Snapchat from in front of AOC's office, she really is the coolest one of all of us. And you'll have one like her too. This friend, while they seem way out of your league, treats each person in the group like family.
The Wild One
The stories that they tell are… interesting to say the least but they are always entertaining. You can always count on them to have an anecdote from a high-school party or a work party that will just make the moment perfect. They know the right story to tell at the right moment, and they have enough wild stories that you very rarely hear the same story twice. They always keep the group laughing and slightly concerned for their wellbeing.
The Quiet but Unbelievably Sweet One
This friend is quietly supportive of everyone in the group, they are everyone's best hype person and a perfect person to lean on. They will go with whatever weird obsession you have (mine deals with cows) and they will accept those obsessions with open arms.
The Dork
This friend is special. You wouldn't expect them to be, at the beginning they seem to be another person in the group until you talk to them outside of the group-chats, and you realize that you have a lot more in common than a future college. You learn that they are actually really nerdy, they love Star Wars and Doctor Who but they're also the most athletic and the closest thing to a jock that you have. They will always make you smile.
The friends that you meet at an Admitted Students Weekend are friends that you hope will be in your life for a long time. And I hope that you all get friends as great as mine are.
