From classy wine bars in Montrose to grungy clubs in Midtown, Houston's nightlife is eclectic, to say the least. So, Rice students, fellow Houstonians, and visitors, I have compiled a list of six places (in no particular order) for you that definitely shouldn't be missed.
1. Anvil Bar and Refuge
There is a reason Anvil is always on the list of the top bars and speakeasies in the United States. With a cocktail list that has over 100 different drinks, craft beers, and glasses of wine, as well as a meat and cheese plate that really is to die for, Anvil is the type of place you bring a date during happy hour if you want to impress him or her.
2. Poison Girl
Dim lights, inexpensive drinks, old pinball machines, and hipsters is what you'll find at Poison Girl. Right on Westheimer, it epitomizes the cool scene that is Montrose. Don't come here if you're looking for a real party, but come here if you want a strong drink and good conversation. If you want the same feel as Poison Girl but want to drink coffee instead, Black Hole is the place to go.
3. 13 Celsius
Located just outside the messy nightlife that usually characterizes Midtown Houston, 13 Celsius is just a super cool place, and all wine is stored at exactly 13 degrees Celsius. With an industrial-chic atmosphere, a European feel, and even an outdoor patio with twinkle lights, you can come here for a glass of wine or the do-it-yourself s'mores.
4. Camerata at Paulie's
The first time I went to Camerata I was on my first date with my boyfriend. And, ladies and gentlemen, this is the perfect recommendation for a first date. You can sit on couches or at the bar, sip on some wine, enjoy the super cool decor, and really get to know your date.
5. Grand Prize Bar
Grand Prize is really fun. In a nondescript location that sort of looks like a house, you can find an interesting group of younger people here. Go in, order a drink at the bar, and if the weather is nice, take it upstairs and outside onto the patio.
6. Mongoose Versus Cobra
Despite the fact that every night that has gotten out of control for me has started at Mongoose, I still think it's a staple of Midtown. Rustic chic and so many beers on tap coupled with some of the craftiest cocktails in the most beautiful antique glasses in Houston, go to Mongoose, and get there now.
