Sometimes you're just in a hair rut. You need a change and a big one. If you're anything like me, you might completely disregard all of the cringe-worthy pictures of your hair when you were little and opt to trim your hair back to having bangs.
Nevermind the fact that you remember vividly how much you hated growing them out before. Or that for a solid six months, it seemed the only thing you knew how to do with your tresses was to haphazardly pull on a headband to cover the slow-growing strands.
Since growing out my hair when I was eleven, I haven't had bangs. Until about two weeks ago. But, I have learned a few things these past two weeks and not all of them are as fun as I thought having bangs again would be.
1. THEY MOST DEFINITELY ARE NOT WORKOUT FRIENDLY
I typically go to the gym at least once a week, (two or three if I have the time and drag myself there) and typically I sweat. A lot. You know what is not very forgiving after a workout? Sweaty, stringy bangs. Thankfully, I had my roller brush in my bag and was able to brush them out after holding my head in the hand dryer in the bathroom. So, pro tip: never, ever leave your roller brush behind and invest in a few fabric or elastic headbands for during your workout.
2. LIKE PEOPLE, YOUR BANGS WILL HAVE GOOD DAYS AND BAD DAYS
Seriously, never leave your roller brush behind. If you are the type to not really do much with your hair in the morning, this is even worse. Bangs love to just not go where you want them. It takes a lot of effort to get them perfectly bumped without one side being flatter than the other. Also, your bangs will make the oils in your hair more obvious if you don't shower every day. This is where dry shampoo is a lifesaver, but not a miracle worker.
3. THEY'RE HIGH MAINTENANCE
You don't realize how fast your hair grows until it's been only two weeks since you got your hair trimmed and your bangs are already starting to poke you in the eye. The only way around this is either learning to cut them yourself or learning fancy tricks like bumping them more than usual or attempting to fit them into a side braid until your next hair appointment.
4. THEY MAKE THINGS YOU USED TO WEAR WITHOUT BANGS LOOK WEIRD
Bangs + Hair down + Turtleneck = Actual turtle wearing a Sia wig.
Sometimes it is possible to frame your face a little too much. And if your hair is dark, this combination is even worse when your hair is left down. Literal. Box. Around. Your face. The only solution I have found to this is wearing my hair up in this scenario, but even then sometimes blunt bangs and a turtleneck just don't mix. With the right color or a mock-neck, though, the same look can be achieved.
5. THEY'RE FANTASTIC FOR WHEN YOU'RE TOO LAZY TO DO YOUR EYEBROWS
My natural hair color is somewhere between dirty blonde and light brown, but I've colored it to be a medium-dark brown with red undertones. Nothing looks weirder than Dark red-brown hair and blonde eyebrows. But, it's okay, because bangs are the perfect way to hide your makeup-free brows when you have just rolled out of bed in time to run to your first class.
For a while, bangs were totally out of style. Almost no one had them and they seemed to be a distant memory of years prior. But, since trends work in a cycle, of course, they would come back and of course I would jump on the bandwagon and get them.
Through all of the pros and cons, I don't regret getting bangs again, because truly I look better with them than without. Plus, something about bangs just feels right this holiday season. Maybe it's all the Christmas movies where almost everyone has bangs, or maybe I'm just a sucker for a trend. Either way, yes, please.
