The expectations for summer are always through the roof, but once the season starts to settle in, cries of boredom frequently ring out. I often hear people say “there’s nothing to do here,” or “Milwaukee is so boring.” If you are one of those people that feel the same way, I have the ultimate fix for you, your friends and your family!
The sweet taste of strawberries on a hot Summer day can’t be beat, but it can be matched at Strawberry Fest! Head on over to Cedarburg June 24-25 for the “Original” Strawberry Brat or the classic strawberry shortcake. This fun-filled weekend is gushing with more than just strawberries!
So, maybe strawberries aren’t your thing, and you prefer the Netflix and chill lifestyle. If that happens to be the case, you MUST attend Chill on the Hill in Bayview at Humboldt Park every Tuesday night! Bring your friends and come hungry! You’re in for a night full of live music and good eats. Humboldt Park so graciously offers Film on the Hill towards the end of summer as well. If you’re a big fan of Bueller, Star Wars, or Grease, Film on the Hill is the place to be.
As Thursday rolls around and you start to get a little thirsty, Jazz in the Park at Cathedral Square is the place for you. Grab a blanket, bring a picnic, and buy some wine. Jazz in the Park will provide you with top notch music in a top notch park.
Speaking of Cathedral Square…every Saturday you can find the Cathedral Square Market full of fresh food, outdoor yoga and Zumba!! Cathedral Square also hosts Bastille Days, July 14-17. If a ticket to Paris isn’t in your near future, this will certainly suffice. Participate in Storm the Bastille 5K, taste some wine, and take selfies in front of the mock Eiffel Tower.
A big shout out to Milwaukee County Parks for the Beer Gardens. With four stationary gardens and two traveling ones, you almost can’t miss them! Sip on a Sprecher Root Beer, or buy something a little harder.
You can’t forget about Milwaukee classics like the Milwaukee Art Museum (free the first Friday of every month) and the Milwaukee Public Museum (free the first Thursday of every month). Bring a volleyball and head on over to Bradford Beach on a sunny day, but don’t forget to stop at Northpoint Custard before you leave. Stroll through the Milwaukee Public Market for lunch or to take a cooking class. Make reservations at Splash Studios to bring out your inner painter (grab some wine while you’re there too!). If you’re dying to go to a Brewer game but would rather not sell an organ to go, opt for the $1 Uecker tickets.
Being a tourist in your own city can be one of the most rewarding experiences. We often close our eyes to what is right in front of us. For more super rad events, check out http://www.visitmilwaukee.org/.
