If you haven't been living under a rock for your entire life, chances are you have heard of the freshman 15. College is full of late-night munching and study snacking, so it can be hard to make healthy choices. Here are a couple of things you should actually be keeping in your dorm room fridge:
1. Baby Carrots:
If you are in college, it is likely that you have realized most dining hall vegetables are less than appetizing. Having carrots in your fridge to dip with ranch or number two on my dorm grocery list, is a great snack to hold you over between lectures.
2. Hummus:
Whether hummus is your dip of choice for pita chips, carrots, or bell peppers, it is a college fridge staple.
3. Water Bottles:
Regardless of if you choose standard water, Coconut Water, or flavored sparkling water, it is necessary to keep hydrated, especially on evenings from Thursday – Saturday, or Margarita Monday.
4. Lowfat Yogurt:
You can spice things up with some greek yogurt, like Chobani, or stick with strawberry Yoplait. Yogurt is packed with calcium and tons of vitamins, and it makes a great breakfast when topped with granola.
5. String Cheese:
String cheese is quite possibly the easiest snack to grab on the go or throw into your backpack for a quick snack during Econ or Bio. Personal suggestion is Organic Valley Stringles Organic String Cheese.
6. Fruit/Vegetable Juice:
When your dining hall has endless supplies of french fries, grilled cheese, and pizza, it can be rather hard to get in your daily recommended amount of fruits and veggies, so getting it via a juice is an easy alternative.
7. Grapes:
If you haven't had frozen grapes before, you must go and put some in your freezer right now. They are super refreshing, and taste like candy. You can also put regular grapes in your bag to eat on the go at the library, since you can eat them quietly.
8. Lean Cuisine:
For the nights when you are too lazy to go to a dinning hall, or when you are so busy 'studying' that you forget to eat dinner, these are the perfect options. I personally suggest the macaroni and cheese, and the pizza.
9. Apple Slices:
Eat them with peanut butter or with cheese slices for the most satisfying snack before you head out for a club meeting. Steal cinnamon from your dining hall to sprinkle on them with peanut butter for the all-star snack option.
10. Almond Butter:
Whether you eat it by the spoonful, on apples, or on crackers, it is super-packed with protein. The individual packets of Justin's almond butter are the work of a genius.
11. Baking Soda:
Keep baking soda in your fridge to keep fruits and vegetables fresh longer. It will also help things smell good when you accidentally leave Chinese leftovers in there for two weeks.
And now for the unhealthy options that you just have to accept are an absolute necessity. While you have to have healthy options, you sometimes just have those days...
12. Cookie Dough:
If you have not eaten raw cookie dough, you have not lived. While, yes, food labels everywhere tell you not to eat raw cookie dough because of salmonella, it very may well be the most delicious late night treat in history.
13. Queso
Cheese. Dip. What else do I need to say?
14. Ice Cream
This cold treat is a yummy treat that you may need when you are mourning a bad grade, or celebrating a good one. You can even add cookie dough, and just make it a trifecta.
15. Adult Beverage of Choice
If this is something you are legally aloud to partake in, you might as well keep that fridge stocked. Vodka-cranberry anyone?
