In today's society, people continue to define beauty in a certain way. Women have to be thin in order to truly be beautiful. Men also need to have six-pack abs if they want to be considered attractive. Society has placed unrealistic standards on us. Celebrities are criticized if they have gained weight because they are not being "role models" for their fans.
Sasha Pieterce and Selena Gomez had to put body shamers in their place when they were harshly criticized for their weight gain. Sasha Pieterce said, “We’ve all heard our parents tell us to treat people the way you want to be treated, but I think often we don’t treat ourselves the way we should be treated,” she continued. “I decided at that point to love myself the way I am right now. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to improve myself, it means that I am making a point to love myself at every stage and chapter of my life.”
Sasha included, “Do not lower yourself to people who refuse to grow higher. If you don’t love yourself, you’ll continue to chase people who don’t love you either." Sasha is a great spokesperson for beautiful women today. She continued in her post how we all need to feel confident with ourselves and I strongly believe she is right.
We all need to feel comfortable in our own skin. We need to feel beautiful for ourselves, not for others. If we spend our lives trying to please everyone, but ourselves we will never get anywhere.
Amy Schumer is also another great advocate for loving yourself and feeling beautiful. While I was reading my latest issue of Marie Claire, Amy gives advice about being true to yourself. She says, "Whatever you wear, whatever you say, however you live, follow your true north-be yourself. After all, what could be better-or more fashionable-than feeling comfortable in your own skin?"
Women like Sasha and Amy are beautiful people who stand up to the haters. Amy even did a parody of the song "That's What Makes You Beautiful" by showing how women feel they have to plaster their faces in makeup in order to feel pretty.
I believe that true beauty is what's on the inside. People are quickly judged by the way they look rather than their personality. We need to learn to love ourselves before we let others determine how we should look. I remember letting others opinions determine the way I viewed myself. In middle school, I spent so much time trying to find the perfect profile picture that I would receive the most "likes" and comments on.
Now, I've learned that I want to feel beautiful for me rather than others. Your beauty shines the most when you are comfortable with who you are. So, continue being imperfectly you because you are beautiful.
