It's happened to even the most summer-loving of us - that point of summer break where all you want to do is go back to school, see your friends again, and all that jazz. If you've never hit that point of summer break, you're one of the lucky ones. I recently hit that point where I realized how much I missed Union, my friends over there, and all the shenanigans one gets up to while in college.
It's a sad point in time when you realize you want summer to be over. For some people it's after the first week, for others it's that last week. As enjoyable as summer is, this overwhelming feeling of missing your college friends, and the fun parts of college comes about when you're separated from them for three months. What's even worse is when you live across the country from most of them so visiting them isn't even an option. That feeling of unproductiveness is absolutely awful especially when you're like me and couldn't find a summer job because you ended much later than other colleges so you missed open job opportunities.
Instead of sulking around, especially if you've hit this point early on in the summer, here's some things you can do to get out of this phase of summertime sadness.
For starters, get out of the house and explore the city or town you live in and take your mind off the fact that school seems like an eternity away. Go on little adventures around the area, find new places to fall in love with, and embrace the fact that you're home. Reconnect with an old friend that you haven't seen for a long time. Remember that you're not alone in this town just because your college friends aren't here with you. If you live in a town where you don't know anyone really well, get out there and try something new like going to the rock climbing gym or a spinning class. You never know who you might meet.
Another way you can take your mind off the fact that all you want to do is go back to college is by taking up a new hobby. Some things I personally enjoy are letter writing, rock climbing, and exploring the city I live in as well as other nearby places. You can embrace your love for things like coffee and try as many coffee shops as you can before you go to school. Bring a book with you, sit by the window and sip on your coffee as you take in your surroundings and the words on the page. Make a summer bucket list and try to tick off as much as possible. Let those summer feelings and dreams take you on a path of fun.
Just remember that once you get back to school you'll probably be yearning for another break after a week. Don't take summer for granted, so go out there and have a good time, make some new friends, discover the awesomeness of solo explorations, and take in that summer sun before homework and classes take over your life.
