There is nothing quite comparable to a college library on a Sunday. Students everywhere – if they are anything like me – have most likely not done an ounce of work the whole weekend and are slowly realizing how much they must get done before the school week commences. Waking up on a Sunday morning and having it hit you like a ton of bricks how your sanity is barely hanging by a string and the balance of social life and homework is actually not balancing correctly at all is a feeling many college students can recognize. Sure, we all promised on Friday that we would do some homework to get a head start and lighten the work load for Sunday, but something always seems to come up. Really, no matter what it might be that comes up, it overpowers homework.
It is surprising that even on Sunday, when it should be crunch time, we still manage to waste a good chunk of time. Some people treat the library as a social hub, dishing and getting the weekend’s gossip. Math homework can wait because did you hear what happened at the party last night?! I can bet there are so many tabs open on your computer, including Facebook, messages, an online store, but at least one of them is semi-related to what your test is on later that week. Multitasking is a very important skill, so why not train now? God bless Apple’s screen sharing ability. You feel productive by simply being at the library, so what you do when you get there is only half the battle… right?
I guess I am not giving a good amount of the student body enough credit because a lot of students really do start on Fridays with their weekend work and are very concentrated when Sunday comes. I can attest that those people are out there, and until I can be one, I will admire them – well, most of them. One student today gave me a scary glare and shushed me when I let out a slight giggle in a silent room. I guess there really are two types of people in the world.
Whether you are into silent rooms with personal desk areas or the more social rooms with round tables, the library is a pretty okay place to spend a Sunday. When you finally step back out into the great outdoors, hours and hours after your arrival and completely Vitamin D deprived, maybe give yourself a little reminder to start earlier next week. Holding up in the library all day will eventually get old, but until it does, you can find me there, doing God knows what.
