"I wonder if people actually know my full name?"
"How could you possibly not know my name, I just told you what it is a minute ago."
"I wonder what people would do if I stopped answering to my nickname."
"Would they know what to call me?"
"I bet you she doesn't even know my real name."
"He definitely doesn't know my name."
My name is Cameron, but everyone calls me Cam. When I say everyone, I mean EVERYONE. Even people I don't know call me Cam. I don't mind if people call me by my nickname, in fact I like it sometimes. But other times, it gets annoying and I just want to ignore everyone. It is one of my pet peeves when people who don't even know me, call me by my nickname.
When I introduce myself, I introduce myself as Cameron. I was born with that name, I am proud of my name, so thats what I expect anyone to call me. People often assume when they first meet me, because my name is Cameron, that they can shorten my name to Cam... uh negative. My name is Cameron. I told you that my name is Cameron for a reason. I like when you ask me if you can call me Cam. I will say "sure" and then you can call me by my nickname. If you don't ask me, then I expect you to call me by my name.
I get annoyed when people send me messages and type "Can" instead of "Cam." I know, "stupid autocorrect," but it happens all the time. I am not a "Can" I'm not short for trash can, I am "Cam" short for Cameron. GET IT RIGHT, PEOPLE! I know texts are supposed to be short and quick, but reread them to make sure everything is spelled right (that also includes: Their, There and They're, You're, Your).
Overall, I don't care if you call me Cam. Make a good first impression and just make sure that it is okay with me before you just think you can call me something other than what I introduce myself as. It's just better for everyone if you call people by the name they want you to call them, it's really important to some people. If you ask to call someone by a different name, they aren't going to get mad. I know I won't.
