Thanksgiving first started when the pilgrims came from Europe over to the United States. They were starving and dwindling away until they decided to do a three-day feast to thank God, and celebrate with their Indian friends. The Native Americans helped the pilgrims with harvesting and hunting. A Pilgrim named Edward Winslow described Thanksgiving as “Our harvest being gotten in, our Governor sent four men on fowling so that we might, after a special manner, rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors." Ever since then, every year it has become an American tradition to sit down with family and friends and thank God for everything he has given us.
Everyone has their own traditions to celebrate on Thanksgiving. Some may have their whole family together with a huge turkey, singing, playing games, or watching football. Others might keep it simple and just cook dinner and pray together on this day. Whatever your tradition may be, it's always nice to be able to get together with everyone you find close to you and eat. This gives everyone a chance to catch up on each other's lives and simply just have fun.
Each year, my mom, my sister, and I cook dinner together. We don't eat turkey, so instead my mom will make chicken. My sister and I will split up to make dessert, the mashed potatoes, and the salad. We will then set the table, put on a movie, and watch together as a family. Every year, this has become our family Thanksgiving tradition.
It is nice to just relax on this day with family and friends, just to hang out and eat. Of course, you don't have to worry about homework or anything unless you're a college student. I still have tons of work to do, but I will take time out to celebrate with my family.
Put aside anything you might have because it is not as important as the moments you'll have at the table with your family. If you can't have dinner with your family because you work on Black Friday, maybe arrange a lunch or breakfast with them, so you still get the chance to eat with them on this thankful day.
