Shortly after Halloween passes, it is becoming more and more acceptable to break out the Christmas music and the Santa Claus sugar cookies. Trust me, I'm all for the holiday spirit... I once watched Elf every day for a full month. However, if we skip on over to Christmas mode, we are forgetting about another very important holiday.
Thanksgiving.
A time to remember the reasons for our thankfulness. A time to shove an entire slice of pecan pie in our mouths. A time to be spent around the table with the people we kinda love the most.
Don't forget about the turkey, the dressing, and coming back for seconds... and thirds. When it comes to Thanksgiving food, the limit does not exist. Wear the proper clothing, something with a lot of stretch.
Don't forget to bring plastic containers to take home leftovers. If your family is anything like mine, you'll leave with enough leftovers for 3-5 business days.
Don't forget about the people in your life who may not have Thanksgiving plans with their family, maybe they live too far to go home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas break. Invite them to bask in the carbs with you!
Don't forget to save your appetite. Start prepping for Thanksgiving dinner at least two days in advance.
Don't forget to get a little festive. After all, this is the last day you have before everyone busts out the Christmas decorations.
Don't forget to thank your parents and your grandparents for cooking or catering or whatever it is they do for the holidays. And also, thank that random second cousin in your family who always packs the dessert.
Don't forget to take the time before you eat to really admire the food before you. Smell it, poke it, just don't post it on every social media site with the caption "#blessed" like everyone else.
Don't forget to remember all that you're thankful for, and do a little dance when you remember just how great your life really is... well, except for the finals week part.
Most of all, don't forget to count your blessings. Take some time, apart from all of the food and the kooky family members that come out of hiding during the holidays... and give thanks for all of the people in your life and the opportunities at your feet.
Give thanks this holiday season, and give yourself an extra slice of pie.
