Hey Mom,
It's officially your day of the year, even though you deserve recognition every minute of every day. I guess we'll just have to make up for it all at once.
To put it simply, you're amazing. You spend all that time at work and still come home to care for your needy children who swarm you as soon as you walk through the door. But you don't complain; you are the very definition of selflessness.
I'll admit that I'm not always thrilled to go out with you, but it's not because I'm embarrassed to be seen with you. It's because you talk to every. Single. Person. It isn't unusual to be stuck at the grocery store for hours on end. In recent years, I've come to appreciate your social butterfly persona, because I get to watch your smile light up the room. I can't even count how many times I mention your name to someone and see their eyes light up at the sound of it. Not gonna lie, I even get a little jealous of all the people you share your time with.
Thank you for sharing your kind and giving spirit with everyone. The way you genuinely care about other people inspires me to be a better person. I still remember your room raids as a kid when we would go through my obnoxious amounts of toys and decide what to donate. I usually fought tooth and nail to keep all the stuff I hadn't touched in months, as I'm sure you remember. In retrospect, I appreciate your ambitions to keep me humble while helping others in the same moment.
Thank you for your parenting skills. After all of my shenanigans as a kid, I'm certainly in for some major payback, if I ever become a parent. Remember that time I ran away in first grade? Good times. Although my younger self still cries for justice about the unfair frequency in which I had to do dishes and other chores, I admire the discipline and work ethic you enforced. I also have you to thank for my skills in writing and spoken language. You always made sure I wasn't walking around spouting complete nonsense.
Thank you for always being my shoulder to cry on. Whenever I'm having a bad day, my first instinct is to have you comfort me. Even in college I reach for my phone and automatically dial your number. I hope you know that you can always do the same with me.
There's honestly no way to ever repay you for all that you have done. You're just so darn selfless and content that I struggle to find something you'll actually want. My childhood macaroni crafts and artwork attempts are hardly sufficient, let alone gifting a plant. "Here is a plant that will die at the end of the year. Unlike my love for you." It isn't exactly awe-inspiring. I could splurge and get you a perennial, but it still wouldn't be enough.
Once in awhile you joke about the lack recognition you get, but you're well within your rights to complain. You do so much and expect so little in return. I hope to someday be half the woman you are.
Happy Mother's Day from your favorite child,
Love you most!
