Let's #throwback to our freshman year of college: cramming for finals with the help of energy drinks (notice drinks is plural), having a midlife crisis at the age of 18, going out Saturday night only to hate yourself Sunday morning, and let's not forget...our freshman roommates.
You wanted to kill them, hug them, cry on them, but now, you want to thank them.
Freshman year is the period in your life that is the most accepting of being a hot mess. You don't know where your classes are, you don't know when your test is, and you don't know if that cute boy down the hall likes you. But have no fear, even though they might not be the most accurate, your roommates will always have the answer.
Without further ado, here are the things my freshman roommates taught me:
1. It's Only A Grade: Okay so you bombed your PSY 101 test, big deal. Your roommates will always be there to be a shoulder to cry on, but they're also going to be the ones to tell you to pull yourself together. They'll be the ones who will help you spend more time calculating the final score on the test needed to pass the course than actually studying. They're your reminders that you're not defined as your GPA. So keep calm, because there is more to life than a 4.0
2. Be Confident: One major point about freshman year that needs to be said is that the Freshman 15 is very real. Having a meal plan means that you are stuck eating in the dining hall and no matter how hard you try, the Freshman 15 creeps up on you. Now, the next point is: it's okay! You still look great and no matter how many times you ask, the answer is still, "No you don't look fat." My freshman roommates taught me that confidence is the key to happiness and self acceptance.
3. Live It Up: Contrary to popular belief, four years goes by fast. Before you know it, you're accepting your diploma and walking across the stage. My roommates taught me to have no fears. Join every club imaginable, even if you know you're going to suck. Laugh off the embarrassment, go meet new people, and with all of these crazy changes, don't lose yourself. Your roommates will always have your back throughout every milestone of freshman year. You won't remember the nights you got eight hours of sleep, but you will remember the nights you went out on a Tuesday and spent $60 at the bar (and then cried to your roommates because you were broke...). Don't graduate and realize you forgot to have fun.
So, thank you to my saviors, my wing-women, and my best friends for teaching me more about myself and life that I could have ever imagined. This one's for you: Madison, Sam, and Kristin.
