7 Reasons I'm Thankful I Chose Aquinas College

If you’re like me, you’ve been pretty busy during the first couple of weeks back on campus. I am glad to be back at AQ after a summer of living at home, for many reasons. Here are some of the main qualities that make this place a great school to study at.

1. Aquinas is a small school.

A student can know the majority of the other students by the time their sophomore year starts. Sometimes even before that, if you’re the social butterfly.

2. It’s hard to get lost.

Yes, the first few days of class can be daunting for the freshmen and transfers, but after that, it’s almost impossible to get lost on a campus like Aquinas. If it happens, though, there are plenty of friendly people to stop and ask for directions.

3. The community.

Walks to class are never completely upsetting because the majority of the time, you’ll see a friendly face from a different class, or a friend you haven’t seen in a few days. Stopping to say hi isn’t a problem when it takes ten minutes or less to get from one place to another on campus. Volunteer groups help out on campus and within the city of Grand Rapids.

4. Downtown Grand Rapids.

The downtown area has so much to be seen and experienced. Sunsets on the Blue Bridge and other bridges along the river are amazing.

5. Campus is beautiful.

Whether you want to go for a walk to take a break from studying, or you want to write a paper outside, the scenery is gorgeous. The colors of the trees are so pretty in the fall, and studying on the Ryan Deck in the back of the Moose or at the picnic tables in front of it is a great idea to help you stay focused and get some fresh air. You’ll probably find some familiar faces, and maybe even a study buddy or two!

6. East Grand Rapids.

Reeds Lake, small local stores, restaurants, and more! Walks along the lake are relaxing and fun.

7. The people.

I’ve met so many great people here at Aquinas. Professors care about your success, advisors encourage you and help you stay on track academically. I have made friends who I know will stand by me for years to come, and I will cherish the relationships that I have with them.

Aquinas College isn’t just a college. It’s a place where the people work together to create an environment where students can learn and grow, while making connections and friendships that will last a lifetime. #ICanAQ

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
