Thank you for giving me the freshman experience.

To My Freshman Dorm Room

As my freshman year of college slowly winds to a close, I have become overwhelmed with emotions. One of the things I have been thinking about most is the fact that I have to move out of my beloved new home, my college dorm room. It’s a little scary to say that I will never live here again. Yes I will be back at school in the fall in an apartment, where I will have my own room and a kitchen. All of this is great and I couldn’t be more excited, but I can't help but feel a little sad as I say goodbye to this little concrete box of a dorm room. I have had many good times in this room and learned a lot. This room was my first ever home away from home and in honor of that I want to say thank you.

To My Freshman Dorm Room,

Thank you for showing me how to share a room with someone else. I was never more than 5-10 feet away from my roommate and I loved every second of it. Yes, it is nice to have your own space, but living in a room with someone else taught me a lot about myself and about being aware of others.

Thank you for introducing me to some of my best friends. From my roommate to the other kids on my floor, I have been truly blessed by the amazing people I have been surrounded by. Yes, sharing a communal bathroom sucked. And yes, sickness spread like the plague. But the experiences I made here with people I love were definitely worth it.

Thank you for helping me to be aware of other people’s things and schedules. From learning to study with just a little light on so my roommate could sleep, to teaching me to get up without setting 5 alarms, to keeping my side of the room tidy so that there was room to live, you definitely taught me a lot.

Thank you for being there for me when I needed a place to come home to. You were always there for me through the highs and lows of my freshman year. Whether I came home to you and cried after having a bad day, or came back to you beaming with happiness after the best day ever, the amount of safeness and comfort you provided me with is immeasurable.

All in all, thank you for giving me the freshman experience. I couldn't be more grateful for all you have provided me with. You have taught me so much about myself and I will never forget all of the good times I had. But above all, I will certainly never forget room 3108.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
