I could thank my new college friends who have become my social life or my old friends who keep in contact with me and act like nothing has changed. I could thank my roomie who helps our room feel like home with her decorating skills or my parents for their support. Instead, I want to thank the semester as a whole for providing me with new experience in navigating college socially, academically, and in life.
My first semester of college is completed and I am relieved. It was at times a challenging semester full of “firsts” and learning how to adjust in this new academic and social environment. But, I am equally as excited to start again in the spring.
I am beginning to understand the deeper meaning in the line, "Ever Grateful, Ever True," in Purdue’s fight song. The future is full of uncertainties and this past August was no exception for what the next few months would hold. But now the semester is nearly to the end and I am so grateful for everything that has happened, whether good or bad. In regards to academics, this semester has reaffirmed my natural disposition for knowledge. In the words of JK Rowling:
“Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.”
I am grateful Purdue has given me a greater opportunity and access to a higher education that I look forward to receiving. I am grateful for all of my fantastic professors, my in-class friends who helped and entertained me through the rare boring lecture, the sporadic tangents, the random jokes, and of course the new knowledge I have obtained.
The interesting and unique courses I took were specifically a major factor in my experience.
Thank you to HTM 100
Even though I will not be pursuing a career in Hospitality , I am glad I understand the industry better. I have a new appreciation for anything and everything related to professionalism and hard work in Hospitality and Tourism Management.
Thank you to EAPS 104
Because of Oceanography, I have learned about the ways of the mysterious deep blue sea with alien-like creatures, the sheer power of hurricanes and tsunamis, and most importantly, I have a better grasp of current issues affecting the ocean like Global Warming and pollution.
Thank you to COM 114
Earlier in the semester, I dreaded Speech, however it was not horrible at all. I did not enjoy giving speeches but my professor and classmates made it less terrible. I daresay it was almost fun. And I am slightly more confident with public speaking.
Thank you to EDPS 105
This required Exploratory Studies class was insightful. I learned a lot about myself through the endless personality assessments and reflection assignments along with exploring the many options and opportunities college and life has to offer.
Thank you to my favorite, COM 102
Introduction to Communication Theory was a class I ended up really enjoying. The theories were increasingly interesting and I found myself applying them to everyday life. This class was a clear sign of my interests and without it, I would still be lost regarding choosing a major.
Thank you to Purdue University for providing me the opportunity to have had a semester like this.
