An Open Letter To My Parents

Thank you, Mom and Dad, from the bottom of my heart.

As we grow up, it becomes pretty easy to forget about all of the things our parents have done for us. Whether we realize it or not, the reason we are where we are is because our parents believed that we could be there. I find myself guilty of this every day. I do not thank my parents nearly enough for all the sacrifices they have made for me, so I would like to take a moment to say thank you.

Thank you for giving me life.

It seems pretty straightforward and a little silly, but I would not exist if my parents did not want me to. I am thankful that even after one crazy daughter, they still decided they were up for a little more. I very well could have just been a thought that went away, but instead, they decided to make a thought reality. Thanks for deciding that you wanted more chaos in your life, Mom and Dad, because thanks to you, I am here.

Thank you for holding my hand.

You are undoubtedly the reason why every time that I have crashed, I have not been burned. You hold me up when there is not much left to keep me from falling. I mean this in a literal and figurative sense. Who knows how many broken bones I would have if you had not held my hand all of these years, and although you could not prevent every broken heart, you definitely lessened the blow. Thanks for being the hand that never failed to keep me on my feet.

Thank you for teaching me how to drive.

We all know that I am a terrible driver, and I can only imagine the horror of being in the car with me at age 14. It takes a strong person to agree to put me behind the wheel, and I am thankful that you had the faith in me to do so. Thanks to you guys, I am slightly less terrifying while driving.

Thank you for teaching me.

I may not always make the right decisions in my life, but I have always known right from wrong, and that is thanks to you. I have learned a lifetime of information from you, and because of that, I have been saved from learning everything the hard way. There are times where I have not listened and learned for myself, but you love me and continue to teach me as best as you can, and I cannot thank you enough.

Thank you for protecting me.

I know that you have spent a majority of your life ensuring that my sisters and I are safe, and although you cannot protect us from every evil in life, you have done your best. Thank you for keeping me safe and watching over me, because who knows where I would be without you both around.

Thank you for loving me.

I know that there were times when it took a lot of effort to not want to strangle me. Thank you for loving me unconditionally and thank you for never failing to show that love. I may not have deserved your patience and I definitely did not deserve your understanding at times, but that has never stopped you from showing me how much to care. You love me for who I am, even when I do not deserve it, and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Mom and Dad, thank you from the bottom of my heart for molding me into the person I am today. I may not tell you enough how grateful I am, but I hope this gives you just a little idea of the love I have for you both. You have been my best friends, mentors, and biggest fans for as long as I can remember, and for that, you deserve the world.

With so much love,

Your Daughter.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
