A Thank You Letter To My Dog

My life would suck without you.

A Thank You Letter To My Dog
Mariana Velasco

To my little, white, curly-haired Lucy: Since the day you came into my life, I knew you and I would be best friends forever. There is no one in the world who knows me or loves me as much as you do. There are millions of things to thank you for, but here are just a few:

1. Thank you for for being my alarm clock of almost nine years.

If it weren't for your wet tongue or nose-rubbing and nuzzling my cheek each morning, I would have never made it on time to school or work.

2. Thank you for always eating the food I drop or don't want.

When Mom makes her tomato and mozzarella salad, I always know you'll eat all the tomatoes that I absolutely despise while I only eat the cheese. When I drop a piece of chicken on the floor, I always know you're there to clean up after me before Mom even notices so I don't get in trouble.

3. Thank you for taking up most of the storage space on my phone.

You always seem to be doing something ridiculously cute whether it's sleeping with your tongue out or standing on two legs as you watch the neighbors in their front yard. I don't think I'll ever be able to have too many pictures of you. And of course, I will never get tired of posting Snapchat stories of you sleeping or Instagrammig our adventures we take on together.

4. Thank you for being the best welcoming committee anyone could ask for.

If I haven't seen you in two weeks because of being away for vacation, or I saw you just 15 minutes ago before going to the grocery store, I'm greeted by your enthusiastic bark and that white wagging tail. It is always nice coming home to someone who cares and who is so eager and happy to see you despite the time you've been gone.

5. Thank you for keeping all my secrets.

You never judge me no matter what I tell you. It's so nice being able to let all your feelings out and vent as much as you want without the fear of getting all your secrets spilled. I know you don’t understand me or my secrets, but I still tell you anyway and there is something so special about that.

6. Thank you for teaching me unconditional love.

Even though I have put you in time out and locked you up multiple times for getting into the garbage or eating my slice of pizza, you never stopped loving me. The days I refused to let you on my bed and made you sleep on the floor after you ran around outside all day didn't stop you from loving me or from giving me that big kiss on my face, so thank you.

7. Thank you for always making me feel better.

You always know those days I'm feeling down or mad. You show me that extra love and comfort me in any way you can. Thank you for never letting me feel alone.

8. And lastly, thank you for choosing me as your human and being a a part of our family.

Your big brown eyes, curly, puffy hair and big, gentle heart will always be so appreciated and loved in our home. You complete our family and for that I am eternally grateful.

Thank you for being you and being the best four-legged friend a girl can have. I would be so lost without you.

Sincerely, Your Human.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
