A Thank You Letter To My Roommate

You have saved me more times than you know.

A Thank You Letter To My Roommate
Emily Strobaugh

Dear roommate,

I know we fight sometimes and shut our doors when we need to be alone, but you need to know how much you mean to me. I'm sorry I don't remind you of how awesome you are every day because classes become stressful and our schedules overlap, but as the semester ends and we go our separate ways for the summer, here are ten things I forgot to thank you for:

Thank you for knowing my schedule.

You have dinner ready when I work late on Tuesday nights. You know when I need that nice dress for my interview and have your closet ready to pick through. You know when I just finished a five hour shift and need a nap so you let me fall asleep without saying hi.

Thank you for taking out the trash.

You know when I don't want to get up, or when I'm too busy studying to take out the trash. Thank you for keeping our house clean when I don't always want to.

Thank you for the candy.

When I just finished my exam or had a terrible day at work, you are always willing to cheer me up with candy. The best part is, you don't let me pig out on my own. No matter what the occasion is, you're always down for a chocolate party and I'm so thankful for that.

Thank you for not judging me.

Those days when you're on a health kick and I'm not feeling great, you don't judge what I eat. While you eat your carrot sticks and I'm on my third bowl of ice cream, you don't say a thing. In fact, you dare me to eat a fourth because you're awesome.

Thank you for telling me to slow down.

You know me so well that you realize when I have too much on my plate. You're always there to say, "Let's just watch Netflix." Thank you for reminding me to slow down when I go too fast. I'm sorry I don't always listen, but I'm thankful you care enough to say "stop," when all I want to do is go.

Thank you for putting my alarms in your phone.

You know I stayed up too late the night before so you put an alarm in your phone to make sure I get up on time. When I tell you I need to study for two hours in my room, you're ready to give me a break at the right time. I couldn't get through this semester without your reminders.

Thank you for the last spoonful of ice cream.

You are so selfless when it comes to ice cream, and it's such a blessing. Thank you for letting me have the last bite over and over because we both know I'll buy more in the morning.

Thank you for sharing that bag of cough drops.

When I get sick, you get sick. Thank you for being more prepared than me and stocking up on cough drops for the times we have to get up for class even though we feel terrible. You've saved my day more times than you know.

Thank you for listening to my music.

We don't always have the same taste, but if my music is playing when you walk in the door you don't change it. You let me scream lyrics you've never heard while I cook dinner, and you ask what song it is instead of changing the station. Thank you for your song suggestions when the music gets too crazy instead of asking to turn the volume down.

Thank you for being more than my roommate.

When we first started living together, I always referred to you as my roommate. We were just two girls who lived together. Now, there's a weird pause when someone asks who you are because while you are my roommate, that label simply isn't enough anymore. Thank you for being my roommate, my sister, my mom, but most importantly my best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
