To Everyone On My Campus:
I may not know you personally, but I think you're awesome. Maybe you're my friend. Maybe you're a friend of a friend. Maybe you've seen my face while scrolling through the "People You May Know" section of Facebook. Maybe I sit behind you in a class or walk in front of you on your way to your 9 a.m. Maybe we have met each other and neither of us remember it for, um, certain reasons. Maybe we haven't met, but we soon enough will. Maybe your best friend is my big's freshman year roommate or we happened to grow up in the same town or we have the same exact taste in music, or maybe you just like pizza at 3 a.m. as much as I do.
But whoever you are and whoever I am to you: thank you.
Thanks for not judging me when I'm sweating or dying at the gym. Thanks for letting me awkwardly and silently stand in front of you at Starbucks. Thanks for smiling when we pass each other on campus' main road (then we obviously look down at our phones so it's not too awk). Thanks for sharing the stands with me at our football games, sharing the cups with me at tailgates, and sharing the secret spaces around campus that freshmen don't know about yet.
When anyone asks what the best part of college is so far, I always say, "The people." That's you. You're the people. I am also the people. We the people–like the Constitution or a rap song that hasn't been written yet.
So thanks for being my people–my friends, my classmates, my lab partners, my "People You May Know," and my strangers on the street that I haven't met yet. The people. The really awesome people.
Most of all, thank you for making me love this place more than anywhere else.
