Whenever people hear I’m in a sorority, they all have the same reaction of rolling their eyes and picturing everything they know from the movies. But being a sorority is nothing like the movies, and actually has a special place in my heart. After becoming a sister of the Alpha Beta chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma, I want to thank my chapter.
Coming to college was a hard adjustment. Moving away from home for the first time and being completely on my own was scary and hard. I never thought I would make it through the first few weeks on my own. But I kept thinking to myself that once I go through sorority recruitment, things might get better. Turns out, that would be true.
Let me say, going through sorority recruitment is one of the craziest experiences I’ve ever been through. It is such an intense process. I spent a week surrounded by girls crying and throwing fits about what houses they got. It was insane to be surrounded by that while trying to figure out what sorority was right for me and which one I belonged in.
Everyone will tell you to go into recruitment with an open mind, because who knows where you will end up. Personally, I went in being a legacy of Tri-Sigma, which forced me to be sure I was going through recruitment because I wanted to, not because my sister did. But, after I met the first girl from Tri-Sigma and we talked for a while, I knew that was where I wanted to be. Sure enough, at the end of the week, I was running home to the ladies of Sigma Sigma Sigma on bid day.
When I met Sigma, I was so homesick and scared to be at Kent by myself. But the first few girls I talked to made me feel so at home, like I was already their sister. It didn’t feel like they were recruiting me. I felt so comfortable and happy to be around them. They truly showed me what Sigma was all about and that it is where I belong.
All the girls around are so different in the way they look and with their unique and amazing personalities. I am so proud to wear the same letters of some of the finest girls I’ve ever met.
While there are still days at Kent where I just want to go home and not be at school, Sigma pushes me to work toward my goals and shows me that I can do it, no matter how hard it gets. Thank you, Sigma, for giving me a home when I felt like I didn’t have one.
