Living away from home was a game-changer for me. Other than the increased responsibility and incapability of being an adult, I was terrified of being lonely. Only a couple of months into my freshman year, it was already time to figure out my living situation for the next year, and I panicked when I realized that.
How was I supposed to know who I wanted to live with ten months down the road when I don’t even know anyone that well?
I decided to wing it and signed a contract to live with a friend on my floor and two other girls that I had met through mutual friends. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. Now, a year later, living with them is one of my favorite parts about college. Good roommates really make all the difference in the world and mine make college feel like home to me.
So, to my roommates:
Thank you for climbing into my bed on weekend mornings and laying there with me for hours.
Thank you for always turning my lights off when I’m too lazy to get out of bed.
Thank you for making me food when I don’t want to get off the couch.
Thank you for never being in a hurry to leave the apartment.
Thank you for your closets -- seriously, half the clothes I wear don’t belong to me.
Thank you for always picking me up and bringing me home with no complaints.
Thank you for dancing with me and laughing with me and always making my day.
I’m thankful that when I shout down the hall to see if anyone’s home, my heart leaps when I hear a response. I’m thankful for your accountability and honesty and also that you don’t just tell me what I want to hear. I’m thankful that movie nights are always an acceptable way to spend a night and that everyone being home makes everything feel complete. But overall, I’m thankful for the three of you.
At the end of the day, there’s no one else I’d rather come home to. When the day comes that we’re no longer only a door away from each other, I know that I’ll feel incomplete. Thank you for being more than just my best friends, but also the best roommates a girl could ask for.
