A Thank You Letter To My First Roommate

My freshman year was wonderful because of you.

A Thank You Letter To My First Roommate
Bethany Harting

Dear Freshman Roommate,

My first year could have been a disaster, but thanks to you it wasn't. You made everything bearable and were always there when I needed you. You were my personal support system. I don't think I said thank you enough in person, so I hope you read this and see what a blessing you were.

Friendship

You were my first friend at college. We were both nervous when we met. I was afraid you would be way too cool for me, and you probably thought I was some crazy girl who loved to talk. We came from completely different backgrounds but found common ground in our faith, majors, and awkwardness around guys. Together we braved the first weeks of college, glued to each other's side, worried we wouldn't make friends. Eventually we both found our group of friends and slowly separated ourselves from each other. I don't know what I would have done with out you by my side at the start.

Long Talks

Our late night talks when we hadn't seen each other all day were the best. We could share about what went right and what went terribly wrong. We would giggle our head offs at our boy dramas and stress about tomorrow's test together. This gave me a normalcy like I had at home, where my family would share our days around the dinner table.

The Truth

You always told me the truth even if I didn't want to hear it. Will I be a terrible person if I sleep in tomorrow? You won't be a terrible person for skipping a class to sleep. Should I shower today, it has been two days? Go shower right now. Does this look good on me? Here try this sweater I have instead with that dress.

Constant Encouragement

You are going to kill that interview. I'm praying for you. You look awesome. Your make up is on point. You always look beautiful. Come on, I know you can get out of bed and do your homework. You are smart enough to accomplish your dreams.

The Refreshments

Whenever you would come back to school after being home, you would stock the fridge and freezer in our dorm. You graciously shared everything with me and you knew I would do the same for you. This wasn't really fair though because you bought way more food than me but you didn't mind. The many cases of water we shared. You seemed to buy the water the most because you usually made it to the store before me. You never complained about buying, it even though I probably consumed more than half. I promise I did try to beat you to the store and occasionally I was successful.

School Work

It was such a blessing we had the same major. You were able to help with the awful lab reports we had to do. You always had your homework handy if I got stuck. You gave me pointers about classes you had already taken. I knew I would be warned about how hard a test was if you took it before me. The biggest thing you did was when you saved me hundreds of dollars by letting me borrow your books for the semester.

I could never write down everything I'm thankful for but I tried to hit several of the things. Even though we were only roommates for one year, you will always have a special place in my heart. I hope I was half the roommate you were to me.

Love,

Your First Roommate

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
