Regardless of how old you are or what kind of music you listen to, it is impossible that you have avoided listening to Ariana Grande's top chart single "Thank U, Next"
"Thank U, Next" is a phrase that Ariana Grande coined for moving forward. In the song she thanks her exes for teaching her love, patience and pain. Ariana Grande is "grateful" for her exes because they have allowed her to become "so amazing". The song is an anthem for focusing on living your best life by learning from failed relationships and becoming the best version of yourself.
"Thank U, Next" is just the newest addition to society's lexicon. You may recall previous catchphrases like "Catch me outside" made popular by Danielle Bregoli after her episode with Dr. Phil , "Lets get this bread", "Bye Felicia, and "Spill the tea" started by a meme of Kermit the Frog sipping tea along with the caption "But that's none of my business."
Predicting which phrases will go viral is nearly impossible. For instance, who would've thought a 30 second clip of students repeatedly commenting on a guys white vans would create the infamous saying "Damn Daniel!" In 2016, Time Magazine listed Daniel among the top 30 most influential people on the Internet.
Once one of these sayings go viral, society fixates on it. People take the phrase out of its original context by using it in various other situations where its meaning is slightly altered yet still famously applies.
In my experience, these phrases fade as fast as they appear, lasting only until the next viral saying is coined.
So when will we be saying thank u next to "Thank U, Next"?
