As a sophomore, it's a daunting task to take on the responsibility of a little. You're responsible for mentoring them, molding them into a composed, classy adult, and scolding them when they mess up. Now, multiply this task by about 100, and that's what a New Member Educator is faced with. But that's also why all sorority women will always have a special place in their heart for their Pledge Mom.
For those of you not in Greek life, here's a little low down on what exactly a pledge mom does: every year, as each sorority gains a new pledge class, the pledge mom basically makes sure that each and every member of the huge pledge class acclimates well into sorority life, learns the do's and dont's of being in their chapter, and doesn't do anything to harm the name of your chapter. Basically, they are completely in charge of an insanely huge number of girls' fate in their new home.
She's the person who older girls in the chapter come to when they witness a younger member being too crazy at a late night, who the younger members come to when they have a question, and who, on occasion, fraternity men ask permission from to take a new member out on a date (yes, that really happened).
So, on behalf of all sorority women who have been guarded by the older sister in charge of new member education, thank you for answering our texts always, even if they were sent for the silliest of reasons. Sorry for asking what time chapter started three million times every Monday morning and what we should wear.
Thank you for making us feel so welcome and pumping us up for the coming year. And for not lying about it being the best year of our lives.
Thank you for running up to us and giving us a hug whenever we saw you out and about. Even when you were in the middle of talking to a really cute guy.
Thank you for waving to us on campus, sitting with us at lunch, and always being excited to see us in the house. Heading the welcoming committee makes a difference to scared, shy freshmen who are unsure about how this whole college thing works.
Thank you for being the best role model that any of us could ever ask for.
It takes a special kind of person to want to be in charge of the actions of an entire pledge class, and they don't always get enough recognition, so thank you, pledge moms, for all that you do.
