Thai-style ice cream has been taking over the nation by storm. Luckily for us UT students, we have pretty easy access to this delicious treat. If you've walked past the food trucks behind the Co-Op lately, you've probably noticed the new Ice Scrapers truck racking up a pretty good customer line. The truck is owned by a husband and wife team, Les and Jenny, with help from Jenny’s brother, Jess. The owners are extremely friendly, and the glass windows allow you to watch every step of the creation. The food truck is open Mon-Sat 11am - 9pm, and is closed on Sundays.
Their flavors are made from milk and/or coconut milk (for those Lactose free customers), and come in chocolate, vanilla and coffee. The cost of a bowl is $5, which includes two fillers and 2 toppings. Plus, the servings are huge. You can easily share one bowl between two people.
There are 18 fillers that are mixed together with the base and 18 toppings to put on top of the ice cream (these are not mixed in). With that many add-ons, you can create hundreds of different combinations. You can also choose from six pre-set specials if you are unsure of what to get. I recommend the S'Mores Special that comes with chocolate ice cream, graham crackers, chocolate chips and marshmallows mixed in, and a choice between a toasted marshmallow or marshmallow fluff.
The first time I tried their ice cream, I decided on a vanilla base with strawberries and Nutella as a mixer. The combination of vanilla and strawberry unsurprisingly turned into strawberry ice cream, but with the Nutella mixed in, it was like taking a bite of a chocolate covered strawberry every time. I couldn't decide what to top it with, so I went with chia seeds. Does that make it healthier?
On a nice and sunny day, stop by this truck. Each serving takes around three minutes to prepare, and there are usually 2-4 people in line at any given time.
Be careful, you may find yourself here more often than you'd like!
